We drove through and checked out the park- dump station locked and no water at this time. Assuming it hasn’t opened for the season yet, but would double check with a call if you’re planning on using it.

Camped here for one night with 32 ft fifth wheel- pulled into first large spot on the right as we didn’t want to get too far in, but could see other larger trailers further in. We ended up here after trying to get a spot further up the road at Sawtooth Canyon CG but not finding one (4pm Thursday). This was fine for the night- a little bit of road noise but not too bad. Seemed like it was going to be busy with OHV for the weekend so we headed out after one night.

This fit our needs- close to Sand Dunes NP, easy access for 5th wheel, and free. Great mountain views with plenty of spots for all sizes. Road was in okay condition- lots of washboard but we just took it slow. That being said we parked in first turnout large enough for us. Other people drive the road at about 40mph which doesn’t really seem necessary… we walked up towards the end of the road, didn’t make it to the top, there are spots as the elevation starts to climb but only suitable for tents, would recommend finding a spot in the flats if you have a trailer or motorhome.

A little bit of trash in the area but not too bad. Very windy and cold for us, but wasn’t a surprise. Would guess it’s pretty much always windy here. Had someone park 20ft from our trailer our last night which we didn’t understand as there were plenty of other options, luckily we were leaving the next morning.

We stayed here three nights, arrived on Monday and for our first two nights only 1-2 other campers which the host said was pretty typical this time of year for early in the week. Wednesday night saw a few more people, but still only 5-6 in the whole CG.

Stayed in site 5 which we had no problem fitting out 32ft fifth wheel in- a little bit of a steeper approach but pretty level at the top. You could probably bring a bigger rig in, but leveling up will get harder the longer you are. Site 3 was probably a better site for mid sized trailer/rig (we would have fit no problem), it was much flatter overall.

Great hiking/biking straight from camp. Great views from campsite. Very windy, not sure if that is all the time or just our luck. No water or hookups. Would stay here again, but bring our bikes next time!

A great spot for a layover day. We needed to get some errands done (laundry and grocery shopping) so we came late morning, ran our errands, and stayed the night. Laundry in Salida was nice but expensive, easy grocery shopping with Safeway and Natural Grocers. Dump is $10, free freshwater fill (limit 150 gallons), fenced bark park, quite a few RV spots. We parked as far from the road as we could and weren’t really bothered by road noise. Great option for those passing through!

We drove up here with our 32 ft fifth wheel, wouldn’t recommend. Road was mostly nicely graded when it was dirt, but it was moon dust. Minimal washboard but I’m sure with more use it gets worse. At end of first paved section there were quite a few potholes, then it turned to dirt, back to paved and ended in dirt. We came on a Tuesday and there was only one spot left- we parked and walked the loop, good thing cause it would have been a little rough. Some spots right along the (small) lake and the rest were more on the hillside. Turning around was luckily fairly easy, I would not recommend this unless you’re <25’.

Free dump with water spigot. Don’t know if it is potable but we only needed to lighten the load. Very convenient with fuel prices comparable to all stations in town. Separate pull-though fuel island right before dump.

Easy access off of highway with many sites to choose from early in the week. Only a handful of campers here while we were here 7/9-7/11. It seems like they have done recent work on the CG, many large mostly level sites. The only thing is whatever dirt they are using to level sites seems like it would be pretty slimy in the rain, but it didn’t rain while we were here so can’t say for sure. A few could accommodate any size rig. Mosquitoes were quite bad- we didn’t spend any time outside, and when we tried to go for the little hike to the river one morning it was so bad we just walked the loop and went back to the trailer… about 10-15 min to information center in Dawson.

We dumped at one of the RV parks for $5 and water fill for approx $1/25 gal.

This campground met our needs, but that was about it… we were excited when we got there, not too many people, some fairly nice sites and hiking right from camp. Pull through sites are considered “premium” so they’re $25/night. They were really the only semi-easy option for our 32ft fifth wheel. We found a spot at the end with no one else around, thought we’d be set… and then someone took the site right behind us with kids that were very happy to be in the woods (can’t really blame them). And then someone took the site directly across from us and proceeded to run their generator the.entire.day. I’ve never camped somewhere where someone ran their generator for 14+ hours straight. There are no strict generator hours, only quiet time from like 11pm-6am. There were also people that just let their dogs bark and bark while tied up outside their trailer.

The campground itself looked tired, lots of potholes. Too many mosquitoes to hike, no potable water.

I think your experience here will be largely dependent on who else you’re sharing the campground with…
