Camper trailers would probably do best on the plains as the 4x4 trail gets pretty rough and travel up the mountain is only accessible with high clearance off road vehicles. Although a truck camper did go farther up the road than I did. Tent camping is pretty good all over. A descent amount of people come and go, some camping, others hiking up the mountain to camp. The sites get a good breeze as well as ranch cows roaming and coyotes howling in the evening. Ps. Cell service review may not be totally accurate.

There are a few sites on the road up the mountain. It is a dirt road that gets pretty rough for a big rig about 1.5- 2 miles up. If you're tent camping with a 4x4 you'll make it farther up the road than a big RV. There are several pull offs on the road large enough for big rigs. They are pretty level with nice views. We shared our big spot with nice guy and his dog and ended up enjoying his company. Plenty of room for us both.
The space was pretty littered with trash and I picked up a bag full. Plus, there are cows that graze and we came home one day to them enjoying the shade from our 5th wheel. So quiet at night and you can see stars galore. We even saw a kangaroo rat. We did experience quite a bit of wind, but that's expected in the San Luis Valley.
It's about 16 miles from Great Sand Dunes National Park and about the same to the town of Alamosa for supplies.
Overall, a great spot for boondocking. We'd go back here for sure!

Lovely little secluded spot with a view of the mountains. We stopped at the first pull off (which already had a fire pit from a previous camper), but a couple others who came after us found spots a bit down the road. Our dogs loved the chance to run around and explore! We loved it so much we recommended the spot to our friends who were also spending time in CO!

What a great spot. The road getting in was a bit washboard but we took it slow and did just fine. Wide open area with great 360 degree view. There unfortunately was trash all over. We did our best to pick up around us but....come on people!!! Anyways Zeus loved it too. Would absolutely recommend this spot!

I didn't have a problem with cleanliness when I stayed, and I would recommend getting there early as spots seemed to fill. Beautiful spot right under the mountain, and close to the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Don't forget to look up when the sun goes down.

Easy to locate. The road in and out was a bit rough. About 15 or so miles from The Great Sand Dunes

We camped in a tent, and the area is super windy, so we ended up leaving the flat areas behind to climb the very rough road up the mountainside where there are trees and bushes to provide some cover. No amenities to speak of, but the view! Wow! I don't recommend taking a trailer up to that part, but in the flat parts trailers would be absolutely fine. I don't remember if I had data, but I could talk on my phone no problem (at&t).

I went to camp here but decided against it once I saw what it was - a scrubby hillside with nothing there. The one plus is that it isn’t far from the Great Sands National Park.
I opted to pay for an annual SWA (State Wildlife Area) pass that gets you free entry into San Luis SWA a bit further down the road. There are bathrooms and FREE electric hook up. You can stay for two weeks at a time.

The drive into the road was very sandy but out 2 wheel drive van did great. Parked on the second large spot with fire pits still on the flat area before the road ascends up the mountain. There were 3 other cars/vans that joined us in that spot but everyone was very respectful and super quiet. We loved the cows that walked around in the fields and across the road. The site was clean and Verizon connectivity was good with 4G. It can get very windy and chilly at night but we loved the beautiful prairie views and sunset and especially the night sky! We saw the Milky Way with the bare eye!
