The road in was nice, not too far off the highway. We stopped January 12th and arrived right as the sun was setting. There was one other camper there, never saw or heard anyone. We love boondocking and it was a perfect overnight stop. Nice to have a garbage can. Clean and quiet.

Your typical state park dump station. It's outside the park/campground. Need park sticker to use. Has a supply for rinsing. Has a dumpster and a separate fresh water spigot. If you pull up far enough you can be filling you fresh while dumping. The pressure is better at this water spigot than inside the campground so it fills faster here.

We came in from the north, would have been easier from the south. The road is gravel and maintained but lots of washboard so take it slow. There aren't a ton of identifiable spots but only 1 other camper when we pulled in on Sunday. Nice clean location and quick drive to Custer. We work full time and it was nice and quiet the entire 3 days, pulling out this afternoon. No cell service but our Starlink was perfect. We felt safe and would come back again. Very little traffic. Our spot was a challenge for leveling but we got it done. There are other more level spots.

We were going to head further down the hwy but noticed a class A entering this area on our way into the Dunes. On our way out of the park (15ish miles) we decided to pull in and check it out. East access, the road isn’t perfect but just take it slow. There were a couple of muddy sections but we made it through just fine and multiple cars/suvs came in after us. There was a large empty area so we pulled in. Had it to ourselves until a lady in a car pulled in and parked on the other end of the same area (not a problem). There is a 12mph breeze and it’s supposed to come down to 4-5 overnight. We had to close some windows and put on a hoodie (perfect!), it’s supposed to get down to the mid 50’s. After the hubby rides his bike up the mountain and back down in the morning, we’ll head out. Amazing sunset, no trees but we prefer that for our solar and Starlink. There is some trash in the fire pits and around the site area, not terrible but we’ll pick some up in the morning… leave it better than you found it!

We stayed here while visiting family in Imperial, Ne for Easter. We used the Iron Ranger to register and pay, all sites are FCFS. The ground is very sandy and the sites aren’t very level. It’s right off the hwy but there wasn’t much traffic. Our site was $30/night for 50amp. There are water spigots throughout the campground and the dump station is at Area A (south of our campground). There are bathrooms and showers (didn’t use). If you have dogs, be careful where you walk, lots of stickers. The Verizon service was ok, not great. We used our Starlink mostly. There were only 3 other sites taken in our campground. Overall a great place to stay. There is a beach close by that looks like it would be fun in the summer.

We pulled in at 9p for the night. It is right on I-80 so there is interstate noise. My husband didn’t sleep well but I slept fine. Easy in and out. Nice grassy areas for the dog to do her business. Maybe 6 semis and 4 other campers when we pulled in. More semis when we left at 7am, must have pulled in during the night. It worked for us.

We are traveling from Lincoln Ne to Spearfish, SD and wanted to get a head start. I called the day before and was told there was a donation box and they ask for $15/night. Full Hookup if you need it. We pulled in at about 9:15p and there were 2 other campers who appeared to be set up for a more long term stay. Easy access right off the Hwy. It was quiet other than an occasional train horn but didn’t keep me up. It worked perfectly for what we needed. There was a picnic table and fire ring. Fishing too.

There was a person in front of us when we arrived. I went in and paid and got the code. While I was doing that my husband saw the previous guy put his sewer hose over the water spigot that is also considered the "potable" water. I even asked inside if they had potable water and she said "yep, it's right out there by the dump" 🤢 It's a little crowded in the lot but doable. If you are expecting to fill with fresh, I'd find another spot.

We just pulled in on Thursday before the 4th and found an amazing spot. The access was good, easy to find and lots of spots. We stopped in Leadville at the sanitation station, dumped and filled for $10. I feel like we got lucky and that there won’t be anything available tomorrow.

We were in this location a total of 7 nights. I'm going to repeat some things others have said just so you have a date stamp on this information. The roughest part of the road is coming off the highway. We are in a spot that is away from the others. It's hard to tell if someone removed some small boulders and logs to open this spot or not however it was open and there is a fire ring so we took it (first spot as you come in, a little below the other spots). There is a garbage dumpster across the highway at the Lizard Head Pass pull out. It's very quiet at night. ZERO Verizon service, amazing Starlink speeds. Mid to late July - low to mid 70's for highs, upper 40's at night, perfect! I would suggest making a stop for fresh water before getting too far up the mountain. I called Priest Gulch Campground about 30min south and was told they have full hook ups at sites but no water fill station. The host at the Cayton Campground let us have 5 gallons and didn't seem too thrilled about it. Someone said there was water at Rico, we didn't find any. I called the Stoner RV Resort (37min south) and he said he would allow a fill for $10 so that's your last bet if you are coming from the south. We came from the north and had dumped at the Maverick in Montrose but they didn't have potable water. The Telluride Wastewater Treatment plant has a sign by their water that says "not for drinking", we called ahead and they said it is potable, the sign is to discourage people from using their hose (not clean). If you bring your own hose, that is an option for potable water for a fee (we only took 10 gal so we paid $5). This dump/water is only accessible regular business hours. I guess I my number one piece of advice, make sure you have a FULL tank of water when you arrive in the area. Trout Lake is within 5 minutes and amazing for SUPing or whatever your choice of water activity. If you want to go into Telluride, go to Mountain Village, park for free and use the free gondola. Parking is an issue in Telluride.
