Confirmed by 6 users | Last reported on October 16, 2023We stayed here in September, with a 24 foot trailer. It's boondocking, no amenities, but with spectacular views, hiking nearby, and a 20 minute drive from Telluride. This wouldn't be a good choice if it had been raining, pretty rugged, in spots, on this dirt road. The only small drawback is, although you feel like you're out in the middle of nowhere, the road is fairly close by, so some noise during the morning and evening, but at night, it's pretty quiet.

While driving home this past summer, I started scouting places on satellite maps images to boondock for a night. The Lizard Head Pass Trail had what appeared to be a large enough parking area to perhaps pull off for the night. An hour later, we pulled in and it was, in a word, magnificent.
Folks park there to access the backcountry for multi day trips. As such overnighting is allowed. In the lower pull out there is a pit toilet, but no other services. And that’s the beauty of it. Nothing but vistas, night skies, deer, and a rambling bear. Plenty of level space to camp.
No that I know it’s there, I’m sure we’ll be back.

This site has a spot for everyone of any size. It’s easy to get to and the road in is short and while bumpy, it’s fine. We are pretty careful and made it just fine. The views are spectacular and it’s so peaceful. It’s just a short drive to Telluride too!

This site is directly across from Lizard Head Trailhead. The view is beautiful. It’s very open with some trees around. No T-mobile coverage. Would stay again.

This spot makes it into our top 5 most beautiful Boondocking places of all time! Even though it’s right off the road it was hard getting my Class A into it because the road had eroded making it a steep drop. I was coming from Telluride so I had to make a U turn and come into it from the Rico side, making it less steep. The road was full of pot holes so take it slow. Don’t show up on the weekend because it will be packed. We got there on a Monday and had several site to pick from. ZERO CELL SIGNAL! Have to go into Telluride for a signal with Verizon.

Very scenic camping spot for RV’s. We took our 23’ trailer here with no problem. Can get crowded on the weekends. There is a garbage dumpster at the rest area across the street from the campground. The nearest water and dump station is by Telluride, like 10 miles away. They charge a $15 fee during business hours. Or it’s free if they’re closed. They didn’t really seem to care about me paying the fee when I went there. This campground is the most scenic one I’ve been to so far.

Easy access right off the main road outside of Telluride. About 20 mins from town. Quiet and toilets dumpster across the main road. A bit bumpy to get into the camping area but completely manageable for any car.
