I set out on a solo road trip to see road side attractions in March 2018. I had a set plan of places I wanted to see but a fairly flexible schedule. I planned to be gone 8-10 days. I scheduled one night on Airbnb and one night with Couch Surfing.
Springfield, Ohio, United States
Home Base.....Here we go!
This was a great first stop on my trip! The family is so nice and welcoming. Make sure to call and make an appointment. You can paint another layer if you wish or just enjoy it! They do have a donation jar so make sure to chip in. Sign the wall before you go.
Casey IL is a great spot to stretch your legs. Several attractions are in a few blocks. The residents of the town are very thankful you are there. Cute shops and cafe/candy shops.
Cute stop. The liquor shop across the street sells tokens for $1. Put the tokens in and the dragon will spew fire. I did not do the fire due to the sun being directly behind the head and I never would have seen it.
This is on a fairly busy street. I was able to pull over on one of the side streets that was closed for construction and get a quick snap.
I can not say enough good things about this place. It is amazing. I do have some tips. Wear sneakers, comfy pants and shirts. If you have to carry a purse, make it a cross body bag. You will be climbing and going down slides. Be careful of your phone. I found 2 in slide shoots. This is a must stop!
I did not enjoy this stop at all. I think kids may find the fart jokes funny, but if you are an adult and have a grown up sense of humor....skip it.
Cool stop! The former owners daughter and son in law have recently opened this back up. They are trying to keep the magic of Rt. 66 alive. They have a small gift shop that was not well stocked when I visited but they have big plans to have that fixed in the next few weeks. Several picnic tables outback. They accept donations. Sign the fence!
This is also on the Rt 66 must see list. A group of volunteers know the history of the Whale and are excited to share it with you. They are also trying to keep the magic alive. Small gift shop that has post cards and stickers. They accept donations. Sign the guest book.
This was my farthest West destination and a must see on my list. It was very busy the day I visited. The cars are a sight to see there in the middle of a barren field. I was VERY disappointed at the litter. There were thousands of paint cans in the field. I actually heard parents telling their children to throw the cans in the field because they did not want paint in the car. Be prepared if you care about litter...it pisses you off! I did not paint but took a Ural Motorcycle (0ne of my passions) sticker to leave my mark. I am sure it was painted over before I made it to the car.
This is actually at an RV dealership. I was afraid I would have sales people hounding me, but was happily wrong. The museum is in its own building and you just walk through on your own. Cool old campers and cool old motorcycles. Sign the visitor log!
Beautiful place to camp or spend the day. I paid $8 for a day pass. There is a spring fed pool and the lower springs. There are several places to hike behind the springs. There are ropes to jump off and water falls to play under. They have a butterfly garden with giant wind chimes and a hammock or two. Great place to spend a hot Texas day.
I stopped in New Orleans to see the Nicolas Cage Tombs. Unfortunately, my schedule did not allow time to take a several hour tour. I did not enjoy my time in NOLA. I did have an AMAZING Airbnb room and host.
My first time in Gulf Shores. Even though it was cloudy and 70 degrees, it was wonderful. Ohio was getting a snow and ice storm so I was happy w the clouds and I managed to get a bitching sun burn. The beach is beautiful but the rest is quite touristy. I stayed two days to just relax!
This was a scam...skip this visit. The "big" brick is made of normal sized bricks and is a sign for a company.
I missed the tour of this place due to traffic issues. They did let me wander down to the mouth of the cave. Really big and really beautiful. Stop, but be there before 4pm!
I changed my original plans a bit as I went along and that was fine by me. I skipped two places, I missed two due to them closing before I was in town. Stayed an extra day on the beach. This was an amazing trip and I hope to do another one soon. I hope to ride the Ural on the next trip! 3600 miles. $295 in gas. I did spend too much on hotel rooms. I will car camp or Airbnb more on my next trip.
