“A breath-taking cave system with tours.”
Originally named Bats Cave, was first developed as an attraction by Jay Gurley in the late 1950s. It was declared a National Natural Landmark in 1972. The first thing you notice about Cathedral Caverns is the massive entrance. The huge opening measures 126 feet wide and 25 feet high. And it gets even better. Inside the cavern, you will find Big Rock Canyon, Mystery River and some of the most beautiful formations Mother Nature has ever created. Among them, you will see Stalagmite Mountain, The Frozen Waterfall and Goliath, a huge stalagmite column that reaches the ceiling of the cave some 45 feet above! Cathedral Caverns is the perfect field trip for your school, church or other group. You can visit anytime, as the cave maintains a comfortable 60-degree temperature year round. Make plans to visit today! The Park is open 7 days a week from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Tours leave every 2 hours. In addition to cave tours, the state park offers gem mining, picnicking, and tent camping.
Family, boyfriend & I went here about 2 years ago. Sometimes it was hard to hear the tourguide being in such a large group. But that didn't take the fun out of it at all. It was wonderful and we all had a good time. It's really not that far from Huntsville/Madison/Athens, so if you're in the area you should definitely check it out. Very family friendly. I believe it is also Wheelchair Accessible.
I took my mom and my two sons, ages 6 and 8, and we all enjoyed it. Great idea for a hot day!
We visited April 23, 2015. It wasn't very busy so we had a chance to chat with some of the staff...awesome folks! My 86 Y/O 2x leg amputee Dad was able to ride in the golf cart instead of having to be pushed in wheelchair. It is accessible the whole way, but there are some steep hills to be pushing someone either up or down! The caves themselves were really neat and the guide was funny, informative, and was genuinely enthusiastic about her job. From my Dad to my 2.5 y/o grandchild, all had a great time. Tip: bring a light jacket or sweater because it is a little chilly and damp.
Took the family here yesterday and we had a blast! The cavern was very impressive, our guide was great and the shop area was really nice. Kids did the gem harvesting, loved it! Would recommend calling to obtain tour hours, web site only has operational hours. We ended up having to wait 75min for the first tour of the AM. Worth the money for this unique experience.
Absolutely gorgeous park.the cave your is AMAZING and the woods around the campground are gorgeous.
This place was absolutely incredible. Best $20 I’ve ever spent. It’s like a whole new world down there. I’m still in awe.
Great stop. Very interesting. A little pricey.
Very beautiful. Had a great time.
This stop was a pleasant surprise! We walked inside our first cave and saw the most beautiful rock formations here. Take the tour or just walk in for free! There’s also gem mining for the kids and the gift shop had some nice souvenirs.
Tour took about 1 1/2 hours (you must go in with a guide, tour times and prices are on their website) very easy walking path. The cave is very extensive with giant and spacious rooms. The stalagmite and stalactite formations are more impressive the farther into the caves you go. Especially loved the "Goliath" and "pipe organ" formations.
