Very clean, well kept, free place to camp. We came in from the south and followed Google Maps directions, which had us drive 4 miles past the GPS coordinates given here, then make a U-Turn... in reality, you can just take any of the turn around points between the N and S roads to get on the S road which takes you to the turn off for the campground. Once on Washington Ranch Road, turn right onto it, then drive about 1/8th mile down until you see the first dirt road on your right. Take that road (drive over cattle guard) and drive about 1/2 mile until you reach the campground.

When we arrived all RV spots were taken, so we just parked along the fence on the North side for the night (visiting Carlsbad caverns in the morning anyway).

Checked AT&T cell signal and despite only having 2 bars of service the speed was FAST... 138mbps down and 20mbps up. Verizon was also fast with with 52 down and 17 up.

Great free spot to stay. Two camping areas on either side of the road, space enough for maybe 6 rigs total.

Google tried to get me to take a dirt road to access this location from the freeway; DON’T take the dirt road. It’s muddy and you’ll sink. Instead, drive to the next paved road (on the right after the big field) and resume navigation.

There is a water spigot on the left side of the road camping area, and another near the archery range at the end of the road.

If the main camping area is full or too muddy, drive to the archery range at the end of the road and there is a parking lot in front of the community center building; saw someone parked there for the night, though I’m not sure it was “official”.

It's a rest area, but as far as rest areas go this one is great for an overnight. There was room enough for 50 or big rigs, but there were only a handful there when we came in for the night. Dumpsters nearby, and water, though there was a sign next to it that specifically said it's not for drinking. 20 or so day use picnic tables and pavilions too. The cell signal was great for ATT (full signal) but only so-so for Verizon (1 bar of LTE).

Should have listened to the 2nd reviewer. We too were lured by the amazing views of the 1st reviewer and thought we’d be fine with our 31’ trailer given his 32’ made it up. We were wrong. The road up is quiet steep in spots and hairpin turns made it extremely difficult and technical to navigate. We made it to the top but only after ripping some stuff off the bottom of our trailer. Then, once we got to the top, the views were amazing, but there are no even remotely level spots to pull off the road for anything more than a camper van. Unfortunately, we had no choice but to spend the night up here because we got a flat tire on our trailer somewhere on the way up. I know the pictures make this place look amazing, and the views are glorious, but please DO NOT attempt to reach this spot with a trailer. It’s not safe, it’s sheer cliffs on either side of the road in some spots, and there are really no places to turn around. Spoke to a Forest Ranger who said they do NOT encourage trailers on this forest road (too bad their weren’t any signs to that effect!). Also, when getting our tires replaced, the tow company rep said “what made you think you could bring a trailer up there?”... I keep asking myself the same question. Take my advice; don’t do it (with a trailer).

We arrived past the check-in time to find closed gates. Major bummer, but the guy who lives in the private residence nearby drove up to us as we were looking for an alternate location on our phones and offered to open the gate for us to let us in. Very nice guy, and much appreciated. Too bad the gates weren’t just open for folks coming in later than 4pm!

This is a small park with a lot going for it. The sites are all recently renovated (level, new power and water service) with the pull-throughs (5 of them) having cement pads, grills, and hanging poles. The pavilions is brand new as of spring 2018, complete with bathrooms and showers for both men and women. There is even a laundry room with free laundry,1 washer, 1 dryer, that were fully functional and clean.

The town of Windsor takes a lot of pride in this park. Billy, the camper attendant (who was the fire chief in the town before retired after 50 years of service) told us that the city was tasked with comping up with a creative way to utilize their river access. They built tree houses along the river (2 complete, another under construction) and built full walkways along the river to access them. Definitely check them out.

There is a shooting range off in the distance that can sometimes be heard, but we didn’t find it disturbing us at all.

We were worried about mosquitos upon seeing the proximity to the woods and water, but they were not bad at all. Didn’t wear bug spray and got bit maybe once or twice.

BEWARE the fire ants! My wife stepped out of the car and inadvertently stepped on a test and was bit 5 or 6 times on the legs before we realized what was going on. Was them off of you with water.

Cell service was great with AT&T... 55mbps down, 12mbps up. No sprint service at all.

The dumpster is on the inside of the wooden fence, for those wondering where to put garbage (I just put ours in the garbage by the pavilion, which was permitted, but filled quickly).

Billy, did say that he had chased out some folks who were “trading dope” in the parking lot for the treehouses, noting that there are quite a few surveillance cameras in the park. Didn’t make us feel unsafe, but something to consider.

If you get a chance to talk to Billy, he’s a wealth of knowledge about the area and the park; he’s also just a really nice and humble guy.

In terms of quality, this is a hard park to beat at $20/night. If there was a kids playground nearby it would have been a 5/5 for us.

Nice wide lanes to enter and exit; dedicated area for RVs to fill water, dump and fill propane. A bit pricey at $10 but a nice stop outside Amarillo.

They do have a dump station but it costs $10. Easy enough to pull into.

Great area lots of spots to camp (20+) but was almost full when we arrived on a Sunday evening.

As many other reviewer‘s have noticed, be sure to take the first road and not the second. The GPS coordinates was in here on Campendium are for the second road. The coordinates for the first road are 32.7446865, -105.9339590.

Fast cell speeds on both AT&T and Verizon.
