This campsite at 9100 feet has it all… Great private open spaces, some in the trees and some out in the open which I prefer. Fire rings, beautiful views and, strong cell service. What more could you ask for? Only thing I don’t understand is why anybody would pull right up next to you when the dispersed camping is open and you can park anywhere. I figure if people don’t want to be alone in the wilderness they should stay home. I come out here because I want to be alone and not listen to people talk... So people… Please don’t pull up next to me or any other person who wants to be alone in the wilderness go find your own spot. Not ll of us are scared to be alone. Oh and it could be a bit breezy up here and chilly this time of year. But it’s worth it. Access is easy and the road in is good.

If you don’t have a National Park pass the Ranger… Who is very strict… Will have you pay the $30 national park entrance fee just to go dump your tanks… I said no thanks and turned around. I don’t do national parks because they’re too crowded so I don’t have a pass and I’m definitely not paying $30 to empty my tanks and get freshwater… I’ll wait till I get to Flagstaff.

Like I said, not the most scenic area in Montana but the solitude and silence, not to mention, the price make it worth it. I almost passed by this site because there were no reviews but I made a U-turn and thought I would take a look at it and it works just fine… It’s kind of a parking lot that doubles as a makeshift campground for bird and water fowl hunters and enthusiasts. It’s only about a half a mile from the main road on a gravel road and cell service is very good if you have Verizon. I wouldn’t spend days here but not bad for a quiet overnight.

7/13/20 UPDATE:
I initially planned on only staying 1 night but I am on my 5th night here. On my 2nd day here I walked all over and found that there are a few more places to camp than the parking area that I mentioned above. I was hesitant to explore with my trailer attached since I didn't know what the turnaround opportunities were and since I was only planning on staying 1 night I didn't unhitch. The roads are in great shape for any size rig. I found a nice spot further into the management area and it has been quiet and peaceful but be prepared for mosquitoes starting in the afternoon. You can stay here for 14 nights and it's FREE. Unfortunately, no campfires are allowed, that would have helped with the skeeters. The other camping areas are any parking areas around the management that have picnic tables and a vault toilet. Spots are not really specified so you can just park how you need. The small town of Choteau is only a short drive away and there is a city park (that also has camping for a fee) that has an RV dump ($5) and potable water. I prefer the solitude and silence of this area opposed to a city park next to the RR tracks.....you might too. But good to now there is a small market not far away too.

I still couldn’t believe when I woke up this morning that I was the only one here. This lake is beautiful and it was so peaceful and quiet last night. It was a little chilly this morning… About 30° with a hard frost. Thank goodness for my tiny trailers furnace. This is a hidden gem along the way to my next stop and I would definitely come back here again… easy access even for big rigs… There’s no numbered spots but it’s pretty easy to see where to park… Of course, since I’m the only one here I got the best spot with my own little private beach that had moose tracks on it… no frills… Just perfection!

Kind of a rustic and basic campground but who needs more? It was quiet and pretty windy .... not $10 anymore... $12 a night for a single spot. $24 for a double spot.

I love when I score a great free spot with all of the ingredients that I like. Easy pull through level spots, mostly, covered picnic table for grilling, a beautiful water view and great cell service. As of this writing, it’s very quiet here but we know how fast that can change… Right? This was perfect for an overnight stay on my way back to the Tetons.

I pulled in on a Wednesday and went to the left at the small intersection. I saw a few spots but just didn’t think they were a fit for my 16ft TT on the right side of the road. Then I found a perfect sunny spot with decent cell reception on the left side of the road. I wanted to situate my trailer to get the most sun on my roof top solar panel as I could... the spot looked relatively flat but was kinda of wonky. Not totally level but it works.

I noticed lots of chipmunks 🐿 right away and didn’t think much of it. That 1st night I could hear both chipmunks and mice crawling around the underbelly and under my sink. Ugh. Luckily, I have 1 mouse trap down there and quickly caught one. The next day I put 3 more traps around my trailer to get the mice. Right now the score is... Cheyenne 5 - 🐭 0... they are relentless. Not sure if it’s the time of year or what but I’m thinking of heading out tomorrow. Can’t afford any rodent damage to truck or trailer. Not much I can do about the chipmunks... but they’ve gotten under the lining along the bottom. Hope they aren’t building a neat. Kind of nerve racking.

Temps are in the low 30’s right now and 70’s in the day... chilly in the morning but perfect in the day, which is why I came up to 7780 ft... to escape the heat.

Lots of dust from passing vehicles but luckily the wind is pushing it all to the other side of the road. Not much traffic till the weekend but still not that much.

Not sure if I would take a big rig back too much further than about a mile, if that. I walked the road and didn’t seem to be a lot of places to turn around. There is one big rig spot to the right as you drive in... if you’re longer than about 25’, I’d suggest that spot.

Otherwise, quiet and peaceful. Just wish the rodents would leave me alone... and no my other mice deterrents didn’t work... Irish Spring, dryer sheets, moth balls.... nope, these mice are serious. So I had to get the big girl traps out. Hate to kill them but I know how destructive they can be. 😖 🐭🐭🐭🐭

It was a very dusty long drive out here but not bad for my rig. Lots of oil trucks on the main dirt roads but once you turn off for the buttes you probably won’t see anyone. I saw two cars down at the trail head but they left quickly. I found a great hilltop site overlooking the Buttes.... it took a little bit of work to level out but it’s doable and I would definitely come back to the spot again. I watched a couple of pretty good storms come and go… Luckily they weren’t too bad. So quiet and beautiful out here… I’m surrounded by cows on this open range with views forever. 🐄 Yeah you can see oil rigs and windmills but it’s so worth it for the solitude and silence. Yesterday I was the only one here… This morning I see a rig way over on the other hill but other than that no one. So if you like solitude and silence this is the place to be. I’ve heard some say it’s difficult to get here but it’s not… Follow Google maps and it will bring you right here along with the signs that you will see along the gravel road. And I have a strong 2 to 3 Verizon signal all the time… Amazing!!

After a week of Boondocking in some very remote locations in AZ I needed to do the typical civilization stuff today and a little RV maintenance. So I thought I would treat myself to a night at the RV corral… I don’t often get full hook ups but for $35 for the night, I couldn’t resist. I had stayed here maybe three or four years ago just as an overnight on the way to and fro for an art show. Since my last visit it’s under new ownership and it is just adorable and pleasant here… Check in was a breeze and so friendly. I did laundry, the laundry room is clean and adorable. This time of year and during this Covid pandemic it’s not that crowded here so that’s kind of the way I like it. So if you’re passing through Kanab and you need a place for the night this is a great spot or for a couple of days as a base camp. And Wi-Fi is really good here if you’re close to the office as well. There’s a little road noise from 89A but like I said, town is not crowded so it really wasn’t an issue but I’m just used to places that are so quiet it hurts your ears.
