Oklahoma also has its share of retro Route 66 hotels (notable today for their vintage signage). A few of the more famous ones along the route are the Desert Hills Motel in Tulsa, the Skyliner Motel in Stroud, and the Lincoln Motel in Chandler. (PHOTOS - Tatiana)
“Make a stop at Elote Cafe in Tulsa to take on the Puffy Taco Challenge. Puffy tacos are corn or flour tortillas that are filled with air and deep-fried until they puff out. They are then stuffed with tasty yet filling toppings, and as many as possible must be demolished in 90 minutes in order to complete the challenge. The current champion sitting at the top of the leader board managed to devour 23 puffy tacos. Could you do better?”
The historic Rock Cafe in Stroud is another iconic Route 66 stop. It also has a deep connection to the movie "Cars" and it was also featured on the show "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives." It's famous for its mouthwateringly golden-brown chicken-fried steak, and if you're in the mood for something sweet, try their Diet Doctor Pepper float. (PHOTOS - Tatiana)
After all that driving, you're probably thirsty. Head over to POPS Soda Ranch in Arcadia. This is a landmark gas station and diner, but the real draw here is the hundreds of sodas they offer. Plus, there's a massive 66-ft tall soda bottle out front for a great photo-op. While in Oklahoma, head to Arcadia's POPS Soda Ranch, where you can try more than 500 sodas! There's a gigantic 66-foot-tall soda bottle out front and it's a fantastic place for photos, especially at sunset, when the stark landscape seems to glow. The landmark diner is also an operating gas station. “This sculptural take on a soda bottle and straw soars 66 ft. into the sky. Like a rocketship from another realm, it’s THE must-see Route 66 landmark, standing next to the space station with which it arrived. Each night as the sun sets on Arcadia, LED lights transform it into a dazzling light show of Times Square-quality luminosity. An infinite array of colors and patterns salute the world’s greatest variety of soda pop inside. Take a front-row seat at the counter where the sights include bubbly POPS fountain service and hand-dipped ice cream milkshakes. Or choose a booth, a window table or, weather permitting, a table on POPS' patio. Way cool. From mouthwatering Chicken Fried Steak, to tasty burgers and sandwiches, POPS Restaurant has it all! Come in and try our signature burgers, made with 100% Black Angus beef and a variety of toppings and sauces! On weekends, breakfast lovers consider us eggs-perts with the lightest, fluffiest and tastiest egg creations. Our beverages start early with orange juice, coffee, tea and hot chocolate. But the obvious attraction is our record selection of over 600 ice-cold sodas, POPS-picked from around the world, from South America’s Guarana Brazilia and Austria's Almdudler to Hawaii’s Waialua Pineapple Soda & Oregon's Hot Lips Sodas.” (PHOTOS - Tatiana)
Quaint hotels and motels near and on Route 66 have been accommodating road trippers for decades, but stopping at these haunted hotels along the Mother Road may bring you face-to-face with some unexpected fellow guests… Possibly the creepiest haunted tale along the Route is the story of “Effie.” Oil tycoon W.B. Skirvin built the hotel in 1910 and was considered one of the finest of the southwest. During the Prohibition years, Skirvin supposedly had an affair with a maid, conceiving a child. To hide his infidelity, Skirvin allegedly locked the maid in a room on the top floor of the hotel. The increasingly stir-crazy woman gave birth but was still confined to the room. The captivity finally drove her mad. She jumped, with baby in tow, out the window to her death. The name of the maid is a mystery, but hotel employees named her “Effie,” and she’s said to still haunt the place despite massive renovations over the years. Men claim they’ve been propositioned by a female voice while in their rooms, and some claim the ghost of a naked woman showered with them during their stay. Others report creepy noises and maid carts moving down the halls on their own. The New York Knicks even blamed a 2010 loss to the OKC Thunder on the spookiness of the place.
