We just happened to stay here for a night as we were passing through the area, and found a gem! Such beautiful waterfront sites, lovely wooded setting. We wished we had time to stay longer. But we will make a point of returning. The only downside was the shower. The shower stalls only had a curtain on the outer shower area, but no curtain separating the shower from the changing part of the stall, so water kind of went everywhere. Water was lukewarm. But that didn't take away from it being a very nice campground.

I can't add much to what's already been said. We were at the park on the weekend and it was very social. Our neighbors were driving around with an amplifier on the back of their golf cart playing zydeco music. We didn't mind it as it was only during the day. The park is way out of the way, and the LA roads are not trailer friendly in many places. We happened to be camping during the monthly Dutch Oven Gathering which happens the 2nd Saturday each month. The Latanier Cookers host a meeting, greeting, cooking and eating event, and campers are invited to come and try the dutch oven cooked food. Much of the food offered was cajun and was an amazing treat to get to try. I would go back for the Dutch Oven Gathering alone.

We stayed in Nov. and it was pretty quiet, very few other folks around. The camp store and laundromat were closed. We had a pull through site, which was great because we were staying in our RV for the first time and were nervous about backing in or out. We were a couple sites from the closest bathhouse and boardwalk to the ocean. I believe there were 4 boardwalks in the entire campground. The boardwalk takes you across the dunes to 1.5 miles of beautiful sand beach at Chesapeake Bay Beach. This is calmer than the "ocean side" around the corner on Virginia Beach. The bathhouse was rustic and could be cleaner. We had water and electric hook-up and had no complaints about either. The campground is located in the First Landing State Park which includes numerous trails. We biked the Cape Henry Trail and enjoyed the opportunity to experience the cypress swamp. The picnic table was pretty "seasoned" and we didn't use it. We bought wood at the office at the Visitor Center when we checked in. It wouldn't burn without our own kindling. But we did enjoy a fire one night. All in all we found it a good spot to camp, despite being a little rough around the edges. One thing that is worth mentioning is that the noise from the nearby military base is almost non-stop.

The only reason to stay here is the proximity to Charleston. The campground is right off 17, which goes right into Charleston. It was cheaper than other options in the area, and we were able to get 2 nights at half-price with our Passport America membership. However, it was pretty run down. The majority of the campers are long-timers and maybe all-timers. Many rigs looked run down and it added to the appearance of a place that had seen better days. The bathhouse was also older and rough around the edges. The shower space was too small and almost impossible to turn around to get dressed. The train noise was ever present, day and night. I just didn't feel comfortable. Also there was a used diaper in our fire ring upon arrival and when we went to use the dump station, there was raw feces on the ground which I discovered when I stepped in it.

This is the ideal campground. We had a spacious site, with plenty of room between other sites and campers. We are able to walk across the road and over a board walk to the ocean and the most amazing beach. There are two other beach access points at the campground as well. The sand was so well packed that it was very easy to walk the beach, which we thoroughly enjoyed! The water in the showers is so hot you actually have to use cold water also and there is free wireless. We were on site 12, which is an outstanding location. The bathhouse was "in our backyard" and the ocean was in our front yard. The wireless router is housed in the bathhouse so the signal at our site was excellent. There is also a nice campground gift store with basics and lots of cute touristy stuff. There is a paved bike path which runs north and south from the campground. We rode it for a bit, but it runs so close to the highway that all you could hear was traffic noise. Walking the beach was a better option.

We stayed at this park during Thanksgiving. While the site was on the water and we had a lovely view, we didn't find this park charming or endearing in any way that would lead us to return. It was packed for Thanksgiving - every site was full. That may have influenced our assessment and how unimpressed we were. It wasn't a bad place, but it was just ok.
