We stayed here a night on our way towards Salt Lake City. We wanted to visit the Utah Field House of Natural History in Vernal, Utah, and the National Dinosaur Monument, which is also close by. This was the closest dispersed camping area to where we wanted to be.

We only travelled about a mile off the highway to the trailhead, and turned around and came back about halfway to a small pond.

The importance of scouting ahead and walking the road: this area is red clay, and it looked like it might have rained a few days prior, but the ground seemed dry. I wanted to drive down a small decline and park by the pond, but after walking on it, and my shoes getting inches of red clay stuck to them, I decided camping up on the road was a much better idea. The top of the clay looked dry, but right under the surface it was sloppy.

The general area was beautiful, however, this particular site was probably used by locals. There was some trash laying around, lots of spent brass from people shooting there, lots of tire tracks, and even the legs of some deer which a hunter had left there.

Overall we enjoyed this site, and if we stay again will go back further and find a spot a greater distance from the highway. We did have a little cell reception which was nice.

We have only boondocked a few times in our camper, and we have never used BLM lands before. This was also my first experience using this website and finding us a place to stay. We knew about where we wanted to camp and it was easy to find this place, thanks to this site.

Horse Canyon was so easy to find and to access. We read some of the previous posts and drove about two miles down the paved road to where, looking at the satellite image of the area, there was a V-shaped access road to the right. I stopped there and walked the road, which was not an issue for our setup, which is a 30' travel trailer and a F250. I was able to drive down this access road and then even pull off a little into the small scrub trees.

The ground was firm, with shallow softer sand in some areas. The area was clean but there was quite a bit of broken glass in the area. It was so quiet and I think we were the only ones camping in the area. There was a bit of road traffic on the paved road, but it did not last into the night.

We enjoyed some small hikes in the area whilst we were there, heading up to the top of the canyon for some amazing views. The view of the night sky was worth the stay alone!

We had not planned at staying at any RV camp grounds on our stay, but we also wanted to visit Salt Lake City and there were no close by dispersed campgrounds open at this time of year. We made the decision to stay here after calling and receiving such friendly service.

Driving to the site, and where the site is located, was a little worrying at first. It was a very industrial area with a lot of homelessness and quality of life issues going on. This, in my mind, did not bode well for where we were going. However, we were pleasantly surprised with the site, the cleanliness, the friendly staff, and friendly people staying there.

We were able to use the hot tub, but the pool was not yet open for the season. They had a cool arcade room with some old school arcade games in there, which both the adults and kids loved. The toilets and showers were kept very clean and you had 24 hour access to them with the coded doors.

They also must have security or a good police presence in the area, as I had walked around at different hours of the night and never saw anyone there that didn't belong. I did hear yelling coming from the neighboring vacant lot one night, but that was not the KOA's issue or fault.

This was a great halfway point for us on our way back from Utah. I tried calling to ensure we had power, as people here have mentioned you have to do. However, I had called after they were closed so I was going there thinking we would just use our generator.

When we arrived, two of the three sites with power were already taken, so we took the third. The gentleman in the site next to us said he had been coming there for years and that if the power box was open, to go ahead and hook up and make sure we pay the price for the hookup. The price per night was $10 without power, and $25 with. They have a pay box at the entrance where we paid our $25.

The site was quiet, with only nominal road noise from I-90. We heard a few trains go by, but you quickly got used to them and they were not an issue through the night.

This was a nice little campground and I thank the town of Drummond for keeping it nice and clean. There was a single vault toilet in the campground and our site also had water.

There is no dump site.
