There is a dirt/gravel lot that looks legal to park/camp in right off the main road. However, the sites near the airport might not allow vehicles anymore. The snowmobile sign on the dirt road going towards the runway says “maintained snowmobile route no wheeled vehicles”.

It appears you’re supposed to park in the dirt lot then walk to the sites for tent camping only just southwest of the runway. However, the road is clearly still used by wheeled vehicles and is in good condition. No 4x4 needed.

On the other end of the airport there’s all sorts of “no overnight camping” signs and “club members only” signs. Make sure you stay on state park property which is marked by signs.

The bugs are also horrendous although this is probably seasonal. I was here in late May. I went to the North Campground as an alternative but the bugs were just as bad so I came back here since it’s free and I don’t need hookups.

Only one other RV in the dirt lot. Airport looked deserted. No planes and the office appeared closed. Runway was overgrown and not mowed. I did see a few bikers, hikers, and an ATV come through. There’s a trail that comes right by the airport.

Beautiful area though and full Verizon signal. If it wasn’t for the bugs and questionable legality I would have rated this a 5 star boondocking spot.

NOT FREE! Cost is now $15/night. First come first serve. Must check in by 10pm. Checkout is 11am the next morning.

There are about 7 or 8 spaces with brand new 20, 30, and 50 amp electric (see photos). Boxes are locked until you pay and check in with security.

These are not camping spots. They are parking spaces with electric boxes, that’s it. If there is not an empty space next to you it’s extremely tight.

If it was still free with electric I’d rate 5 stars, but $15 can get you into an actual campground in the area. The parking spaces can only accommodate small to medium size rigs.

Casino is just ok. Very smoky and pretty small.

Ok for an overnight if you want to run AC, otherwise there are better options in the area.

Feels safe and staff is friendly.

Great stay. Large open spots with grassy areas for pets. Free electric and dump station! Restaurant still closed for covid but the hotel has food. They still have strict covid measures in place so expect a temperature check and and wear a mask.

Occasional train noise but not bad at all.

And half the lights weren’t working. Creepy vibes here at night. I agree with the other review. Ok for a pit stop but not an overnighter.

FREE!! Three designated spread out private spaces but plenty of room for more in other parking areas. Only 2 of us on a Saturday. The sites are a bit worn with big potholes but hey it’s free! Picnic table and fire ring in the designated spots. No fires allowed outside the 3 designated spaces but overnight parking is ok.

Really appreciated the constant patrols by police. Felt safe. Big rig friendly. Max 48hrs but perfect for an overnight. Close to town yet rural feel. Good Verizon coverage. Would definitely stay again.

Did I mention it’s FREE?!

Thank you city of Abilene!

This is a family campground. There is a playground, beach, boat rentals, etc.

With that said, be prepared for TIGHT spots. Not big rig friendly at all. You’ll have neighbors just about within arms reach. They pack them in here.

Want a shower? That’ll be an extra 25 cents for 5 minutes (really?).

Want wifi? Guess what? That’s an extra charge too.

Anything you want is extra on top of what they already charge. For me it was over $40/night for a super cramped space with electric only. Not even a water hookup.

Want to use the dump station? It’s in the most inconvenient spot ever. Good luck.

Check out? 10AM. No leeway. So get out.

This isn’t the worst Campground. But there are so many state forest campgrounds for way less that also offer beaches and boat launches. Plus check out is 3pm at the state campgrounds. 10am checkout is kind of ridiculous.

This place is packed in like sardines. If you want to be sitting 10ft from your neighbors but need a playground, this is for you. Otherwise look into the many spacious state park campgrounds in the area for less than half price.

No idea why this place is rated so highly. It’s a typical commercial campground that squeezes you for every penny they can with super tight spaces.

Only reason for 4 stars is due to road noise. I prefer Starett Lake as it’s more peaceful. Otherwise a great stay. No hookups but it does have a dump.

I came in late April and was literally the only person there. The experience may be way different when it’s busy, I don’t know. But it was very peaceful with great views and a rocky beach.

At night, you can see the flames from the many fracking wells in the area.

Nice paths for walking.

Looks like they are installing a brand new dump station right now. Didn’t use the facilities but took a peak inside. The main building wasn’t open for the season yet but the pit toilets looked clean and well maintained.

Took one star away because the sites are close together with little privacy if it gets filled up. The E/W spots also have shared water. And finally, there was no T-Mobile signal and very weak 1 bar Verizon signal.

Overall a nice place though, I’d stay here again.

This place is beautiful! Nice sized wooded sites except for the sites with direct water access which are a bit tight.

Beautiful trails that are also dog friendly.

Only reason it doesn’t get 5 stars is due to some road noise which really takes away from the tranquility of this otherwise beautiful campground.

It’s also a bit pricy at $40 but for that price I did get water/30amp plus a nicer dump station. I did not use the restrooms/showers.

Decent Verizon signal - 2 bars with 2mb/0.5mb speeds.

Campers have been extremely quiet and respectful during my stay.

2:30 check in, 1pm check out.
