Dixie Brewery began in 1907 and was founded by Valentine Merz. At the start of prohibition in 1920 the company temporarily changed their name to the Dixie Beverage Company until ban of alcohol was over. It was the last large volume brewery in the city of New Orleans until hurricane Katrina in 2005. Afterwards it was damaged and production of the beer there has ceased. It is now owned by the Veterans Association, who are transforming the area into a large hospital. They plan to renovate the facade and original building that was built for the brewery in 1907 and turn it into a rehabilitation center. The rest of the complex is to be demolished.
