Ardrossan Historical Museum

Home to the Stump Jump Plough, one of the most recognised and important agricultural inventions of the 19th century. The museum, which is co-located with the Ardrossan visitor information outlet has several historical displays and exhibits telling the story of Ardrossan, its people and its prolific barley and wheat growing industry. The Stump Jump Plough is a popular item within the museum due to its legendary status in South Australia’s history. New to the museum is the jaw of a Sperm Whale which was gifted to the museum after seven whales were found washed up on a beach south of Ardrossan in 2014. The museum is walking distance to some of the best coffee shops and retail on Yorke Peninsula.

Locals Ossie and Maria Hollitt started Emoyeni Wines at their Ardrossan home to enjoy their favourite drop – shiraz and riesling. Emoyeni Wines now offers a quaint cellar door experience (by appointment only) to try the delicious shiraz, riesling and old Tawny Port. A favourite amongst many is their Sparkling Shiraz “The Mooster”, a perfect breakfast treat! Emoyeni means “place of much wind” in the local Aboriginal language.

Coffin Bay’s famous shellfish are sold in Australia’s most exclusive restaurants. Yet they start their lives in racks off Stansbury – a fact you can (quite literally) get to grips with on Steve and Gerri Bowley’s fabulous ‘Deckie for a Day’ tour with Pacific Estate Oysters. The Bowleys own one of the five oyster leases not far out from the little town of Stansbury, and run tours aboard their oyster boat from the jetty. The 1.5-hour experience will have you out to the racks, suited up in waders and up to your waist in the turquoise shallows. Depending on the season, jobs will need to be done, before you get to kick back and sample the fruits of your labours.

Southern Yorke Oysters

Stansbury oysters are grown for a year in the Gulf St Vincent before being trucked to Eyre Peninsula where they’re quickly fattened on the super-rich tides of Coffin Bay. At this point they’re dutifully renamed and their price goes north. Oyster Bay, named for the original oyster beds off Yorke that were instrumental in the region being settled. The natural beds were exhausted by 1890, and Yorkes oyster connection languished for decades until 1966. Drop into Southern Yorke Oysters and grab yourself some locally grown oysters and view oyster grading. For trading hours call Paul on 0407 189 121.

14
Watsacowie Brewing Co.

The premises – a huge Highways Department maintenance shed in Minlaton -- was purchased in January 2017 by the Phasey family. By November, the Phaseys had converted the substantial space to house their brewing gear as well as a fine looking public space. (We especially like the bar top made from recycled jarrah timber beams!). The new brewery called Watsacowie is now a local haven for enjoying a pint over the wood. Owners Brendan and Roxanne offer a growing range of beers and seasonal ciders and for those of you who have beer loving friends but prefer the wine and want to enjoy the atmosphere, they do have you covered with some SA sourced red, white and sparkling. It’s also family and dog friendly so a winner for everyone!

Yorke Peninsula happens to be home to Minlaton Chocolaterie, a world-class Chocolatier that combines the finest chocolate with peninsula-grown fruits and an attention to detail that has earned them a slew of awards. They roast their own coffee beans onsite for a delicious coffee and also offer light lunches and desserts.

Redwing Barn Farmstay

Farmers and kids have something in common – the weather won’t stop them. Redwing Farm offers one of South Australia’s very best farmstays. Located among rolling wheat country south of Moonta, this peaceful, pretty and ultimately thoughtful retreat offers two beautifully tailored self-contained spaces for families – the Shearer’s Quarters and the Redwing Barn. Kids know they’re in for something special the moment they arrive at the lovely main house where owners Damien and Nicola Adams reside. Alongside is a series of rustic enclosures, home to dozens of animals including Godfrey the cow and Menindie the donkey. Kids are encouraged to help with morning feeding duties, a chance for them to learn about the animals while getting some colour in their cheeks. Afterwards they’ll be gobbling down their cooked breakfast of farm-fresh and locally sourced goodies (available to guests) and eager to get into the country style of living.
