“Located near Edithburgh the Wattle Point Wind Farm opened in June 2005. The 55 turbines generate enough electricity to supply 52,000 homes- two per cent of South Australia's electricity.”
The rhythmic turning of the turbines begins to generate electricity in a light breeze of only nine kilometres per hour and reaches full production at winds of around 47 kilometres per hour. Blade speeds can reach up to 222 kilometres per hour but the turbines automatically shut down to avoid damage in gale force winds. It's a fascinating story and you can learn more at the free viewing area on Sheoak Beach Road, just three kilometres south-west of Edithburgh.
