Nope, this isn't Tomorrowland...this is “The Oculus”. It's a futuristic, $4 billion dollar, glass and steel...wait for it... train station. Located smack dab in the center of the new World Trade Center Hub in New York City. Oh, and it's also home to a reproduction of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel.
What's this yurt doing in the middle of nowhere? Well, I mean yurts are actually supposed to be in the middle of nowhere, considering they're traditional nomadic tents common in parts of Central Asia. But this rad yurt is a lot closer to home, in the outlandishly-cool Goblin Valley State Park. And you can stay in it! Surrounded by thousands of weird looking hoodoo rocks or "goblins" as the locals call them. But, it's probably the closest you'll come to camping in Mars.
I don't know about you, but my idea of a perfect afternoon is soaking in a 108-degree water, surrounded by trees. Also, a beer in hand wouldn't hurt either. :) This is Umpqua Hot Springs, located 150 feet above the North Umpqua River in Douglas County, OR. It's open year round, and the 3 hot spring pools can easily be reached by a short but steep hike from the parking area for most of the year.
Well, here's one for the good old bucket list (or whatever you kids are calling it these days)...glacier kayaking! Just head over to Vancouver and hook up with @compasshelitours to make this super rad dream-adventure-of-a-lifetime a reality. But don't forget your mittens!!!
It's called Explorer's Way, or at least that's what intrepid explorers have nicknamed Stuart's Highway. It's a badass 3,000km adventure, and I can't wait to drive it.
Alabama Hills is what I imagine roadtripping around Mars to be like. But don't worry, there aren't any alien probes here...I don't think... Lots of potato shape rocks and cool natural arch formations all over the place…. and the best part is it’s also close to the tallest mountain in the US, Mount Whitney.
"Somewhere over the rainbow"(-colored Ausangate Mountain) "skies are blue, and the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true!" This deliciously-colored mountain is known as (wait for it...) Rainbow Mountain! Located in Peru, the different colors are caused by the mineral contents in the area enhanced by its reaction to the weather. That was a mouthful! Anyhow, at more than 6,300 meters high, and quite far from any major city, it’s not exactly easy to reach… although as they say… if there’s a will there’s a way… it’s definitely one for the bucketlist.
Faena Hotel Miami Beach, 3201 Collins Avenue, Faena District, Miami Beach, FL, US
What the… a gilded woolly mammoth?! Yup, it’s a gold-wrapped real-life 10,000 year old mammoth skeleton created by Damien Hirst called “Gone but not forgotten”... on display at the garden of Faena Hotel in Miami. Such a cool tribute to the mighty mammoth...
Two airplanes… pinned to the ground in the middle of nowhere. It's called Plane Henge, and it's part of the Mutonia Sculpture Park in Oodnadatta Track South Australia… about 430 miles north of Adelaide. There are actually loads of larger-than-life artworks around the park, like the Dream Catcher, Spinning Car, and Time Tree. Plus, it’s near one of the largest geolyphs in the world, the Marree Man.
Whoa. The welcome mouth at Luna Park in Sydney Australia is like something out of a really weird, really trippy dream. But, I kinda love it. The theme park is more than just a giant mouth though, it has some pretty rad thrill rides, like the Hair Raiser, Tumblebug, and Moon Ranger. But, I mean, c'mon, that mouth is reason enough to visit...
C'mon, you know you'd rather be on a jetski on Lake Powell than scanning instagram right now. This huge man-made lake is over 200 miles long, with over 2000 miles of shoreline. So, load up a cooler, slap on some sunscreen, and hit the waves!
Is that a lake full of Pepto Bismol? Ooh, or better yet, Strawberry Kwik? Nah, this bizarrely-pretty lake is part of a series of manmade ponds called Las Coloradas, used to produce salt somewhere around the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. So, what makes it pink? You ask...well, it's actually the presence of tiny red-colored algae, plankton and brine shrimps! Mm, delicious!
The stuff of nightmares! If scaring yourself to sleep sounds like fun then visit the clowns at the Clown Motel, in the desert town of Tonopah, Nevada. Here you'll spend the night with hundreds of menacing clowns...watching your every move… and if that’s not scary enough, there's an old cemetery adjacent to the motel! Pleasant nightmares!
I'm not saying this is an alien outpost...but I'm also not saying it's not. Actually this is a "forest" of 200 welded metal trees, decorated with colorful bottles, and other stuff. It's been "growing" for over 17 years at Elmer Long’s Bottle Tree Ranch along old Route 66 in Oro Grande, California. Elmer started collecting bottles with his father when he was a kid. It’s open daily from dawn to dusk, and what’s even better is it’s all free! But a small tip wouldn’t hurt either.
For 70 years this Crazy Horse Memorial has been sculpted with blood, sweat, and tears. And it'll all be worth it when it eventually becomes the world’s largest sculpture. But how big is it really? It’ll stand about 563 feet tall once completed, with the size of the head alone at 87 feet high (roughly as high as a 10 storey building)! It will also be 27 feet taller than the presidential heads (60 feet) on Mt. Rushmore, that are just 15 miles away.
Now THIS is glamping! 6-acres of pure outdoor perfection. At Wardley Hill Campsite you'll be surrounded by patches of woodland, open green spaces, wildflowers, 3 seasonal ponds, and a bubbling stream. Lazy campers can relax in style in one of the Lotus Bell tents…and dogs are welcome too in this tiny piece of heaven in Norfolk, UK!
What are those sparkling stars on the walls of this cave? Well, glad you asked! Those are actually millions of adorable, little glow-worms that live inside the Waitomo caves in North Island New Zealand. There are loads of caves and plenty of beautiful limestone formations, and other subterranean wonders to explore at Waitomo.
Fancy lunch with a giraffe? Me too! Giraffe Manor is a 1930s-era mansion set in the middle of a lush 140-acre forest… complete with sunny terraces and delightful courtyards. So, definitely plan a visit on your next trip to Kenya!
She probably needs no introduction, as she’s one of the most popular statues in America... if not the world! The iconic Statue of Liberty, standing proudly in the middle of Liberty Island in New York Harbor, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. As it is, she’s not the biggest of statues…. but then again, she’s not just a statue… she’s the universal symbol of freedom and her presence definitely far outweighs her size.
