“Pink Colored Lakes!”
These manmade ponds called Las Coloradas are used for salt production. The pink color comes from the abundance of algae, planktons and brine shrimps in the ponds that thrives in salty water. As the water evaporates, the water becomes more concentrated producing this vibrant pink color. These organisms are a favorite for Falmingos and the main reason why their feathers are pink. The ponds are located at the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico and the best starting point to explore these colorful lakes would be from Rio Lagartos. Swimming are no longer allowed in these ponds.
