“gorgeous views everywhere!”
A favorite of many hot spring enthusiasts, Umpqua Hot Spring is a great place for a soak among the wooded wilds that are part of Oregon's fame. An all natural hot springs overlooking the Umpqua River. No fees! Possible nudity. Gorgeous views!
These hot springs are closed. The trail is open year round, but no swimming/wading/soaking is allowed. There is also a fee of $5/vehicle/day. http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/umpqua/recarea/?recid=66048
The Umpqua Hot Springs are some of the most popular hot springs in all of Oregon. “Umpqua” is the local tribe’s word for “dancing water.”
A few of the pools here sit beneath a lush forest canopy, but a few spectacular others are cliffside, forming a terrace over a roaring river.
The hot springs are very remote, 75 miles northwest of Crater Lake National Park. Visiting between April and October promises you breathtaking views of daily blooming flowers, but the springs are accessible all year.
It’s a nice but unmaintained hot spring as it is a bit of a drive/hike to reach.
About half of the people there brought 3-4 beers with them. Once person lit up a joint but did it away from my family. But it wasn’t party atmosphere.
About 25% were nude at some point. But it was when they were entering / exiting the spring or getting dressed. I was there for 2 hours and didn’t see anyone just standing around naked. I told my teens to just act like it was a locker room at school and no one had an issue.
This is the most beautiful hot spring in Oregon with an incredible view. That said, I favor Terwilliger over Umpqua any day. The pools here are murky and have very dirty bottoms. There's a lot of people that leave trash lying around. It gets crowded. And there's a lot of prudes that show up, feel uncomfortable at a nude spring, stare at you for a little while, and leave. If your driving from Portland, just go to Terwilliger. You'll enjoy it more and it's a shorter drive.
I invented my own sport, mountain crawling. It's 1200 feet straight up and you climb up a treacherous path then crawl down a 20 degree grade. Not worth 4.5 hr trip from Coos Bay.
Hot Springs were open. There's only a $5 fee per vehicle. Got naked and went for a great steamy dip. If you're not into nudity, I wouldn't recommend to go. Besides that, great place!
