We made a stop at a grocery store and picked up fruit/granola bars/etc for snacks and had bananas and muffins for breakfast
Must stop - ice cream break - check out the T-Rex and Jackalope. Kids loved it.
A needed break and the Will loved the Prairie Dogs popping up.
This is where your snacks will come in handy. We made a picnic and hiked the area then drove through the park.
We stayed here - it's worth getting a suite for a little extra (two rooms were awesome after a lot of time in a van). There is a good pizza place in the lobby and you're close to the gondola ride to the overlook and minigolf. There's an ice cream place/playground/coffee shop across the street.

It's worth going back for the evening program at Mt Rushmore.
Super cool/different type of adventure and the caves were nice and cool on a 90 degree day
You can do a horse back ride or a Jeep tour. Just don't put a baby buffalo in your car and try to bring it home.
There are hikes up to the actual memorial, but you may be a little tired of memorials by this time. It's worth a look because it's so huge and all privately funded.

Crazy little sculpture park that is right along the highway and seems to break up the trip.
