The RV part of the park is fairly new and very nice. Sites are large and level, with lots of space in between the sites. However, there are only trees along the back edge so no shade for your rig at any of the sites. Rangers were very attentive and nice and patrolled a lot. Cell service is almost non existent however (Verizon). Phone says LTE, 2 bars, but we even had issues sending texts let alone using any data. Antenna TV was great. One issue that needs addressing is the lack of a sign pointing you from Moccasin Branch Rd into the park. Moccasin Branch is a gravel road, and the RV park entrance is about a half mile on your left (no sign). That road is paved. If you happen to miss this turn, the gravel road descends a hill and a stream crosses it. Impassable for most RVs. In other words, don’t miss the turn. The state park is very well maintained and has a ton of trails, with easily walkable paths.

Very well kept campground. Sites are all graveled and level. Lawn areas well manicured. Not very private (no shade), and you do hear the nearby interstate traffic noise, though. Has two fishing ponds and we caught 16 decent size fish (released) one evening. Very convenient to Mt Airy downtown area, and about a 30 minute drive to get to the Blue Ridge Parkway in the Fancy Gap area.

Very nice campground. Friendly staff, level spots. Very convenient to the beach area and Supply. Kind of a long haul to get over to Oak Island, though, due to having to go up to Supply and then back down. The pool looked VERY nice… although we visited right when Tropical Storm Ophelia hit so neither that, nor the beach was able to be enjoyed much. The bathhouses looked very nice as well. The only thing we would suggest they improve upon is improved directional signs within the park. The main roads aren’t paved- they are the same crushed stone as the sites. It’s very confusing driving from the “new” section where we were over to the office, which is by the old section. Seriously- we had to make three stabs at finding it WITH the map in hand. We’ll be back though!

We stayed 3 nights on one of the creek side spots. They definitely need to keep the campground better mowed and weedeated. It is easy in and out with your rig. Quiet neighbors. One thing that was really annoying was the sewer connection. The huge log/timber that was bordering the site was directly in front of the connection. No way that you could maintain a down slope with your sewer hose on that site. Plus, it was in the very back of the site. Our sewer connection is mid way on the side and it took 3 hoses to reach it. And the water connection was at the very front. Came *this* close to our hose not reaching it. Overall the place needs updating. It could be an AWESOME campground, because the location is ideal.

Lovely little park, well maintained. Sites aren’t too close together, so you have privacy. Paragould, the closest town, is about 20 minutes away, and has lots of food and shopping options. Hiking trails are easy to moderate, and well marked. Fishing wasn’t great, though. Lots of tv channels on antenna, plus AT&T cell service was adequate. We’ll definitely be back.

Very well maintained park. Easy in and out once you get to the park, a bit remote to access though. Decent cell coverage (Verizon). Fire rings were a bit cumbersome and not level. Only compliant was that the electric box and water were at the end near the road and we ended up having to reposition the RV in order for the cord to reach.

Beautiful small park, all sites are tucked in beside a lovely lake. The camp hosts maintain the sites very well. Sites are level and shaded, most have sufficient tree screening for privacy. The little town of Cheraw has a great self guided walking tour of the historic section. We spent a lovely morning exploring. We’ll definitely be back!

For a county park, Dan Nicholas is good. But it does have a few issues that need addressed, especially if you have a larger rig. Some sites are VERY tight, and if you have slide outs, some wouldn’t work for you at all. They’re also a bit unlevel and very sandy. They all need a fresh layer of gravel. They also need to cut down some of the smaller annoying trees that make backing into your site a bit harrowing, to say the least. It could just be “cleaned up” a bit and be much more user friendly. Also, zero cell service. When we made our reservation, we confirmed that WiFi was available in the campground. In fact, we picked the site closest to the router location for optimal service. Well, it was “down”, and it sounded like it was a frequent occurrence. Also, and probably our biggest annoyance - the dump station is on the wrong side. You have to circumnavigate the entire campground and come back in the exit side (when we asked about this because we assumed the road was one way- as are most campgrounds- they told us the road is two way and to just go back in the exit for the dump station, so your sewer hose will be on the correct side.) Not sure what would have happened had we met another RV. Absolutely no way two could pass. Glad we didn’t have to find out. We were there mid-week, so it wasn’t busy at all, but we can only imagine the headache this would have been on a weekend. Even though this park is very close to home, I doubt we’ll be back.

We arrived on a Sunday night and left on a Tuesday. Park was less than a quarter full. We had a lovely spot lakeside (#24). It was definitely the best among the lakeside spots because it had shad all afternoon. Some were in full sun, despite the park having tall pines. Sites are sand, but most appear level. Lake access was good for walking down to fish, plus there’s a good fishing spot near the small dam. We didn’t walk the trails, but they were close by. Other than fishing and the trails, that’s about it that this park offers. But for a nice quiet stay, it fit the bill. There was a park host available, but we never did see any patrols from park rangers.

The pros- Park was clean and well laid out. Sites were private and level. Ours was a pull through which is always nice. We were on the back loop (50) and it was quiet and shady. The sites as you enter do have full hookups we noticed (ours did not), but as far as privacy goes they didn’t have much being on the main thru street. Lots of wildlife. Saw tons of deer that will stroll right through your site, not the least but afraid of you. Also saw a family of raccoons that visited us one evening while sitting around the fire. I walked the nature trail that’s near the campground and it was okay. The fishing pier that campers can use is nice. Beautiful sunrises down there.

The cons- Gnats and mosquitoes! They really need to do a spraying for these. Anytime you are outside bug spray MUST be used, so we spent three days being sticky basically. Also, a minor complaint about fees. They do charge you a “parking fee” of $5. I think this is the only park where we’ve been charged a parking fee ON TOP of our site fee that we’ve already paid when making the reservation. You’d think they could just tack that on to a reservation fee and call it good. Also, the fort that’s on site is NOT free to campers. It’s $10 each to even visit the museum or walk around the area. They should make that free to campers, or at the very least give them a discount. One day we visited St Simon’s island (an hour south) and toured Fort Frederica and it was free. It’s a much larger museum and fort area and we loved it. But, at $20 for the both of us to see the fort here just wasn’t worth it to us.

It’s an hour+ drive north into savannah, and that was a fun day, as well as a fun day with the hour drive south to the Golden Isles area. All in all, we enjoyed our few days here, just leaving with a few bug bites.
