“The perfect fishing spot”

Dreher Island State Park spans three islands, 348 acres and provides access to 12 miles of Lake Murray shoreline. Visitors will find recreational water activities, nature trails and some of the best striped and large-mouth bass fishing spots, all only 30 miles from Columbia.  It has long been a popular location and launching spot for major, national fishing tournaments. For overnight accommodations with views of Lake Murray, lodging reservations can be made in our park villas, or guests can camp at one of many lakefront campsites.

If you want to camp and do some serious boating on a very large lake, this might be your place. However, the sites are really close together and can be pretty loud. There are 3 islands, two with camping and one with the marina. The marina is huge so there's a lot of traffic on the first and second islands, the third was closed when we were there, so it might be quieter in Campground B. The spots are paved and somewhat level, and there's water and electric. The sunrise and sunsets are beautiful if you're facing them -- half the spots in Campground A face the lake.

Outside of the small bit of crawling poison ivy we had, the site offers a great spot for popups and tents. Corner inside lot with a 180 view of Lake Murray. Amenities were clean and well taken care of.

When I made the reservation for a pull through site that was 150 feet long, I thought there would be no problem accommodating our big rig. At just over 42 feet, we need to be careful about where we camp. Unfortunately, this is not the best campground for rigs over 40 feet. In fact, if you are under 40 feet, it would be better.

The campground is beautiful and we have lake views out the back window and along the dining side of our rig. It was fairly easy getting into our sight. What is not easy is driving through the campground with sharp curves and turns and steep drop offs from the road. Although we would love to return, I don’t think we will because of the difficulty with the narrow roads.

Very good AT&T signal and plenty of OTA channels. Satellite dish did not work due to trees.

Also, many/most of the sites here are not level.

Stayed there twice this year. Very popular park, crowded both times. Bath houses were old but functional, lots of spider webs and bugs. Could use a deep cleaning! Sites level and some with good access to the lake. Only real issue was the first stay and it was a group of fellow campers. First night, drunken renditions, over and over of David Allen Coe's "You never call me by my name". Night 2, rinse and repeat. After about the 5th version there was a camper rebellion we thought was about to get out of hand. The drunks retreated to their camper not to been seen or HEARD from again!

The second trip was flawless.

First off, we stayed a total of 7 nights but had to change spots after 5 days because of someone's prior reservation. Our first spot was site #37 which faced the west and overlooked a cove. Nice and somewhat quiet, it is removed from the more densely populated waterfront sites. Good asphalt site that required some leveling for us but nothing complicated. Electric hookup and water on site, dump station is only sewer option here in this particular loop (there are two seperate RV loops in this park).
Bathrooms were clean, plenty of on-demand hot water. Showers have great pressure and coverage. The bathhouses are situated in such a way that there isn't a real clear cut way of walking to them. When all the sites around them are occupied, you pretty much have to walk through the woods with no sidewalk or walkway. May be difficult at night without flashlight.
When we moved to site # 54, which was a prime waterfront site facing south, we were amazed that a neighboring site was using a flat screen TV outside their pop-up trailer. The noise could be heard through a few sites on either side of them. There was also a site further away with a group who were clearly under the influence ( which is fine as long as it doesn't effect the rest of us) who could be heard yelling into the late hours of the night. This happened 3 nights in a row (that we know of) and yet a nearby camp host didn't seem to act on it.
If you like it dark at night, stay away from the more densely occupied portions of the park because those areas are usually pretty lit up with outside rig lighting of all kinds.
Phone service (Verizon)was very good for us.

We stayed 3 nights in site 53. The roads to get through the park are very narrow and it was difficult to navigate our 34ft travel trailer through the campground. Once we made it to our site everything was great! Site 53 required a small amount of leveling, but nothing too complicated. I purposely booked this site because the website stated that it had a “slight” slope. Other sites, particularly the ones that are not waterfront, had huge slopes that I would be too afraid to park our trailer on. All of the sites are well shaded, which made it difficult for our solar panels to get any sun, but electric and water are available at all sites. Dump station and garbage are located on the way out of the campground. The bath house was clean with hot water, but needs updating. We were able to swim and launch our kayaks right from our site. The lake is beautiful and our site had a pristine view of it. Verizon had 3 bars of 4G LTE. I would highly recommend staying here, but definitely research the site that you are interested in so that you know what to expect.

This was our first stay here. It definitely won’t be our last. I was already looking for availability for the next trip before our stay ended. We stayed on Islanders Camp Circle, and explored as much as possible. The lake front sites are decently spaced apart. While the inland sites are a bit closer together, they aren’t right on top of each other. Honestly there wasn’t a site that we wouldn’t stay in, although lake front would be our preference. The sites are fairly level, I was able to get level with just a bit of manoeuvring and not use leveling blocks. A few bumps in the asphalt due to nature, some sites more severe than others but they are all able to be worked around. The park in its entirety was clean, no major clean up was needed upon our arrival. Every 4-5 sites there was a fire extinguisher available which was a first for me. Bath houses were decent and there were multiple available. The loop through the circle is one way, and I saw plenty of larger vehicles, trailers, 5th wheels, motor homes, 40ft plus able to navigate with little to no trouble. Apparently Lake Murray is dubbed,”the fishing capital of the south” and it shows. Lots of vessel traffic on the lake as well as those just floating along on tubes, be prepared for noise coming from boaters most of the day. While that was unexpected due to my own ignorance, it wasn’t a factor in our enjoyment of our trip. Next time we will bring our fishing gear. The tackle shop is clean and well stocked, some supplies available along with souvenirs, firewood and ice. Park staff is young however friendly and informative. My only complaint, which is extremely minor, is that the only dumpster/recycling area is at the entrance to the loop. It forced us to take at least one walk a day to deposit trash which is a blessing in disguise. Even when it rained heavily, on two nights and most of one day, my son (8) and I still had a wonderful time and can’t wait for our next stay here.

Our campsite was on the lake. Our spot had full shade but we still put up our awning tent over picnic table. We were at campsite end of September during the week and was very few other campers out and about. The bathroom were updated and clean. We will definitely be back. It cost us $38 for Sunday night and $22 for Monday night. We arrived late late and no issue getting to our spot.

Great spot on Lake Murray for fishermen. We didn't fish, but everyone else was. Views are incredible.

Campsites are *very* tight. Florida tight. You'll get to know your neighbors whether you want to or not. Leave your giant campsite rug at home.

Bathhouses were reasonably clean and air conditioned. About average for a SC park.

Didn't have much staff interaction myself, but they seemed friendly.

This is a very busy campground. Considering how many people they run through there, they do a decent job.

We got on Thursday afternoon after 5:30 so we missed check in but were told to go to our spot and check in Friday morning. The site was clean and a short path to the REALLY clean restrooms with showers. The host was really nice and we saw him several times checking on bathrooms. Site T8 is the least desired tent locations because it has no real water view. Less than a 30 yard walk and we were at waters edge so we were fine with it. Will be back for sure. Thank you!! Tom, Kat, Lennon and Jagger,
