We were sitting in our site at the Alameda County Fairgrounds, looking to get out of the heat and mainly the smoke from all the fires in our area and doing a lot of fruitless searching until we saw a FB post from a guy who had just pulled into this place. We called and spoke to Ken (nice guy) who said that while they don't take reservations, we should have no trouble getting a site. So we drove up (in smoke most of the way) and are sure glad we made the drive. We are parked inside the fair gate, on the midway and were rewarded with an amazing sunset that first night. The sites inside the gate are not numbered and we got to pick the one we wanted. I suspect they are where the food trucks park when the fair is going on. You park beside one of two big yards and there is water and electric and a dump station behind the building that houses the Eel River Model Railroad Club. There is also a number of spaces outside the gate, on grass, but we are on asphalt. The fairgrounds are on the NW edge of town in a very peaceful setting. We have been walking on the horse racetrack in the evenings. We paid our $28/day fee to Diane (Ken's wife) who is also very nice. There is a $5 fee to dump and/or take a shower. Unrelated, but the same price. If you stay here, you have to go to Ferndale Pizza, it is some of the best we've ever eaten. We got the Wildcat and asked them to add onions. You also have to check out Sweetness and Light, which is a small candy store that makes it's own candy. Check out the "about us" story, that is so sweet.

We stayed here with our 41' Solitude and didn't have a problem, but that would be about the longest I'd bring here. Besides the space length, the road in crosses the spillway and we scraped the rear bumper on the way our because it dips so much. Unfortunately there was a fire 20 miles north of us so there was smoke most of the time. The biggest problem was the water level. A local said it was at 10% capacity and while their was still enough for swimming and kayaking and fishing, getting close enough was the issue. The level was dropping 3' day so the shore was so muddy (and at places steep), you could not launch. The boat ramp was 1/4 mile long, but ended way short of the water. All that said, we'd stay here again, but in the springtime when the hills would be green and the water level higher. They have full hookups, some shade trees, great views and you are very close to Ashland and all it offers.

We sold our house and moved into our 5th wheel and moved into the fairgrounds to get situated (still a lot of boxes to go through). We were surprised how crowded it is, but also by how quiet it is. There are several couples who have been there several years, while they work full time locally. On that note, you have to move sites every 21 days, but it can be for only 1 night and then you can move back (or stay in your new spot). Everyone has been very nice and the bathrooms and laundry room is clean. It is posted that there is no smoking in the park, but that is not enforced and not complied with (although some folks do walk outside the gate). Just outside the gate are two very large grass fields, suitable for dogs and kids and lately they have been hosting drive-in tribute band concerts (that park residents get to listen to for free)! This is not a scenic location. The North section has very few trees and a smattering of grass, but paved roads. The South section has more trees, but seems to be for older rigs. Our first site was on the end of a row and directly across from the WiFi and we got a good signal. Now we are down a few spots, but in the same row and the signal is poor at best. For one thing, the box on the pole could be higher. Our line of sight to the WiFi is blocked by a couple of Class A RVs.
We are in a pull through site. Back in sites are $10 cheaper. Staff is easy to work with, but seem to knock off early. We are still working during the day so only able to see someone in person on the weekends.
