It was a good experience. We were up on the hill with 10 or so other sites packed together pretty tightly. We were between two sites that were occupied with smallish travel trailers, but no signs of life or activity in them. Our site would have been nicer if the owners of those trailers had taken them with them when they left.

Price is up to $30 now with full hook ups. Convenient location on Lake Mitchell and about 10 minutes from I-65 at Exit 208. Call ahead and on-site ranger is super helpful and friendly. New playground. Sunday worship in pavilion by boat ramp (Memorial Day through Labor Day is what I overheard).

We stayed here June of 2020, and it was near or at capacity the whole time. We were right on the creek with partial hookups. Sites on across the road near the office had full hookups.

This is a great place for trout fishing or just relaxing by a trout stream. A truck came through to stock the steam with fish and you’d think it was Christmas and birthdays all at once for those folks in their waders… and for me in my hammock.

Watch out for big deer along the road back to Cherokee… 10 miles through the hills.

The freight train and interstate noise are the price you pay for convenience... and and the Price! There is nothing scenic or exclusive about this place. It’s just an old KOA that’s convenient to I-65 and Birmingham. I think the pad actually used to be asphalt, but it has disintegrated into part gravel. On-line reservation put us in site 49, which was Under the dinette of the nice people in site 50. The staff was very nice about letting us move to 43... by the propane fill station and playground... so we had space outside our door. Most sites are packed in pretty close together. I would have more nice things to say if B’ham South wasn’t so unjustifiably expensive.

Beautiful, large site on the lake… facing east for the sunrise over the water and little sandy beach-like area for kids to play in the water right by the site… and major infestation of ants… Borax around all contacts with the ground didn’t even slow them down. They came up every leveling jack, the tongue jack, the electric line, And the water line. They rode all the way home with us too. Otherwise, a good stop over with dump stations and no sewer at sites.

We came through July of 2019 and the registration volunteers suggested we drive through to pick our own site. 44 and 45 were occupied so we picked 53. There are plenty of good (large/semi-private/lakefront) sites to choose from.

In July 2021, the volunteers picked our site for us, and we decided we would have chosen differently if given the opportunity. Not sure why they put is among a crowded section when there were plenty of larger and more secluded sites with just as good lake access.

As this was just a stopover on our way home and it was rainy, we didn’t care so much about the site, BUT there are some much better options if we were going to stay any longer.

I always resent having to reserve 2 nights because we need a stopover that happens to fall on a Friday or a Saturday. The price isn’t bad. The sites are not stacked on top of each other. The sewer receivers at the sites are almost a foot above the ground, and our drains are only 9”… so we had to use the dump station method.

Stay away from the fish cleaning station near the bathhouse in the Deer Court loop, unless you have no sense of smell. The “playground” is a swing set. The pool is a couple of miles back past the marina, and it has perpetual water spouts shooting over the shallow end preventing any relaxation with a child. Alligators ARE present, so forget about using the “beach” that is kind of grown over with grass anyway.

The location makes this an okay stopover if you do not have young children to entertain. Two nights was a bit much for us.
