Southport Lighthouse is such a hidden gem! We loved our tour of the historic lightkeeper's home and the views from the top of the tower's 72 steps.

Hermann the German is a wonderful part of New Ulm's history and a great activity if you're passing through town! The top observation deck of the Hermann Heights Monument is not for the faint of heart or fearful of heights. If you’re brave, climb the steep stairs—watch your head!—and pop through the trapdoor to stand at Hermann’s feet.

Stopping by to see Punxsutawney Phil, regardless of the time of year, is always fun! You can find Phil visible outside of the public library at 301 E. Mahoning Street.

According to the plaque next to his burrow, Phil is more than 100 years old (despite the fact that groundhogs only live to be 6 or 7). Believe what you will!

The 25-acre park houses a full-scale replica of Fort Christmas as well as a collection of historic buildings and homesteads as well as informational exhibits about the Second Seminole War. Fort Christmas is open 9 am until 4 pm Tuesday through Sunday and is closed on holidays (so visiting on Christmas Day may be festive but not ideal).

Known as the "great Minnesota get together," the Minnesota State Fair is like no other! Take in the activity of the midway, sample a smattering of favorite fair foods, or go for a ride on the Skyride. The best way to end the summer!

After visiting the Surf Ballroom and Museum, head north to pay your respects at the crash site where Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, the Big Bopper, and their pilot perished. A steel set of Wayfarer glasses—similar to those worn by Holly—constructed by Michael Connor of Clear Lake marks the access point to the crash site.

The Seed Savers Exchange is one of the many hidden gems of Decorah! If you've got a heart for horticulture, this beautiful heritage farm is a must-visit. Along with an expansive test garden and adorable farm animals, the grounds of the Seed Savers Exchange also has miles of wonderful hiking trails.

While it may not actually be the world's smallest church, the St. Anthony of Padua Chapel is a sweet stop if you're in the area. Fun fact: You can see a functioning clock replica of the chapel at the Bily Clock Museum in nearby Spillville.

For $3 ($1 for kids under 12) you can watch a short informational video and take a self-guided tour of America's only working Danish windmill. I was a big fan of the mill & the delightfully Danish town of Elk Horn overall. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area!

This is an incredible attraction! Definitely a must-visit if you're in the area. The care and craft that Patrick Acton puts into these sculptures is something you truly have to see to believe!
