“Preserves tens of thousands of heirloom vegetable varieties”
Preserves tens of thousands of heirloom vegetable varieties. Also featured are more than 700 antique apple trees; a visitor center and garden shop; display gardens; and miles of hiking trails.
The Seed Savers Exchange is one of the many hidden gems of Decorah! If you've got a heart for horticulture, this beautiful heritage farm is a must-visit. Along with an expansive test garden and adorable farm animals, the grounds of the Seed Savers Exchange also has miles of wonderful hiking trails.
This is one of the cooler places to go in the area. They have tours that leave from the visitor center. This includes a stroll through their Diversity Garden which has around 150 varieties of rare varieties and 5 "food traditions. They also have some really cool heritage breeds of cattle, which are fascinating. If nothing else, it's amazing to look out over their 890-acres! The fact that blew me away was that they have to individually bag the heads of every corn husk they work on (for contamination purposes). That site alone made the trip worth it. If you're really looking to explore their operations (and not just buy some of the amazingly unique seeds that show up in their catalog) you may want to call beforehand.
A little off the beaten path, but a nice stop. The farm is beautiful and lots to look at... there is more on top of the hill.
