I came in after dark, and was concerned about the reports about getting stuck in sand. I did not find that problem I found the road to be in good condition with a little bit of wash boarding but firm packed. I pulled off on the right side into an area that seem to be frequently used. It looks like a hard packed gravel and sand. No issues getting stuck.

Most of Southern California is difficult for Boondocking, San Mateo Campground is very nice, and not too far off I-5, and very close to the beaches. I didn’t use the shower, facilities, or bathrooms, so I can’t speak for them, but the campground is nice and well-maintained. I recommend booking as early as possible, these campgrounds fill up fast.

Thank you!
Beautiful, secluded, uncrowded spot.
Beautiful dispersed camping, not overly crowded, amazing views, about as good as it gets. Road better than most.
Dispersed camping near Escalante, off Hole in the Wall Road. Amazing views, good dirt road, strong cell signal close to entry, weaker down the road. Great place!
Sitting behind the 7-11, this is a small, basic, full hook up site.
Works out for a quick stay, showers, restrooms, everything worked fine, just a simple place. I’d stay again if passing through.
Decent access, 2WD ok, stunning views in all directions!
Beautiful, almost a secret piece of Sedona. Easy trails, stunning views, history, don’t miss this.
