We scouted out the Grasslands for a stay in the north Texas area. This is where the northern planes meet the panhandle and the hill country of Texas. Spoke with the Caddo-Grasslands HDQ, to clarify disperse camping opportunities. This particular site was on a Mesa that had several campsites and would be great for groups. We were fortunate to have it to ourselves. The roads that we used were CR 2360 and CR 2560 to get to FS roads. All roads were clear, graveled, and in good condition. While this is only one of the dispersed areas, you can download the LBJ grasslands map for specific locations to camp (See Black Creek Lake for a campground). It was quiet, secluded, dark skies, and easily accessible to Decatur, TX. It is great for horseback riding, hiking, and some fishing. We are headed back to this location next week for another 3-day stay.

We drove to this location from Kartchner Caverns where we were camped. We planned to disperse camp here after we explored. I must admit that nearly 10 miles of rough, bumpy, and washboard road caused us to pass. There were many others enjoying the area, and I really wanted to as well. New 5th, made me pass...

Oh and there was one apparently abandoned campsite with lots of motorcycle parts left covered by tarps.

For the Campendium Community, this is a find! This is not a campground or private RV Park. It is a free City Park, and they appreciate donations. Sites have 30amp (surge protector recommended), water, and relatively level. A dump station with water is on-site. Sites share a post with electricity and water on either side. If you are using US-380 to see Texas, this is a good place to overnight. Plenty of fast food options along with some local eateries. County Courthouse has brick streets and many businesses are still located on the square. If you like old hardware stores, there is one in town.

We enjoyed our stay and actually extended it one day twice. Our granddaughter lives nearby, and our daughter was not too far away either. I understand this is the place to be on Halloween. Campers return every year and some have spent hundreds-thousands of dollars to decorate their site to win the contest. Sites are level and easy to access. The Office Team is awesome and makes you feel welcome. If you are fortunate enough to get the senior discount, the reservation must be in the name of the person "of age". There are opportunities for nature walks, but not true hikes. The office rents bicycles, and other items. Oh and there are two buildings for gatherings like family reunions.

There is a great group of restaurants at the Village that includes a Steak House, and a Catfish Buffet.

We arrived early, hoping to get a little extra time in the campground. They queued us in an overflow parking lot, and about 30 minutes before checkin, they let all early arrivals in the park. WOW, fire pit was cleaned out, pad was blown off, rocks were raked, and the hosts were fine examples of hospitality! We didn’t need the bathrooms but checked them out, you guessed it, CLEAN.

Hiking trails for every skill/desire level. Good sunsets, dark sky rules made star gazing fun, and firewood for sale by the bundle.

We extended our stay by three days.

Terrell was our primary host, and we watched him interact with many guests. He is awesome, He connected with a family from Michigan, and his contribution to their stay will be a memory those children will remember for years. He joked, played, taught, and laughed so much with them. A kind human being,
