Confirmed by 2 users | Last reported on October 27, 2023We scouted out the Grasslands for a stay in the north Texas area. This is where the northern planes meet the panhandle and the hill country of Texas. Spoke with the Caddo-Grasslands HDQ, to clarify disperse camping opportunities. This particular site was on a Mesa that had several campsites and would be great for groups. We were fortunate to have it to ourselves. The roads that we used were CR 2360 and CR 2560 to get to FS roads. All roads were clear, graveled, and in good condition. While this is only one of the dispersed areas, you can download the LBJ grasslands map for specific locations to camp (See Black Creek Lake for a campground). It was quiet, secluded, dark skies, and easily accessible to Decatur, TX. It is great for horseback riding, hiking, and some fishing. We are headed back to this location next week for another 3-day stay.

The roads to the area are paved and fairly decent, though the stretch on CR 2461 is quite narrow. Forrest Road 904, where the dispersed camping is located, is hard packed gravel and in fairly good shape. We parked our 36’ Class A on the side of FR 904, just inside the gate, unhooked our Cherokee and went to scope out the area. There were a number of established and very widely spaced campsites along the FR, each with a fire pit, though all but a few were occupied on the weekend. Several sites were even pull-throughs. We did find a nice pull-through, overlooking the valley to the NW. We had the whole area to our selves on Sunday and Monday. Lots of steers grazing around the area and right up to the RV most mornings. AT&T coverage was fairly good here, generally varying between 1-3 Bars of LTE service, with speeds up to 4.5 MB/s.

This was my first boondocking attempt in my 32' Class C, so I wanted something close to home, but not overrun with other campers. This site fit the bill.
Most campsites are in clusters, but some are set further apart. On my visit in early June, there was one large group of folks off by themselves, and one other RV several hundred feet away, and that was it. I felt comfortable running my generator without disturbing anyone.
Can't speak for other times of the year, but lots of room and spots when I camped.
Also, lots of areas away from the main site to walk your dog offleash, and some nice hiking trails.

The road in was pretty easy, just make sure to come in through CR-2461. We arrived from the North and Google maps sent us down CR-2474, which led us to a closed gate and no place to turn around. We had to back out a narrow road and had 5 minutes further south - you'll see the signs for Black Creek Lake. The sites were clean and there were fire pits at many - plenty of trees for shade and sun for solar.
We didn't get to explore the area much, but we'd love to come back and try.

This was a perfect stop along the way north. We have a 39.7 ft 5th wheel and 8ft bed truck so we need space! Plenty of spots to choose from but only one we felt was our size and open space. I'm sure more down the way but we are new to RVing so we didn't want to risk it. Only saw 1 vehicle pass down the path and campers in the valley. Quiet night. Super windy. Would stay again if passing through. Closest gas station we found about 12 miles away but 20 min drive. Other comments said be careful the road you come in on. Our GPS routed us the correct way.

We arrived well into the night and needed to hit the road early in the morning so just cowboy camped in the bed of the truck and woke up to a beautiful sunrise. Really enjoyed being able to crash somewhere other than a parking lot or rest stop.

We spent the weekend of 9/24‐9/25 camping at one of the dispersed sites toward the end of the recreation area on road 904. The pad site was relatively level and needed only minor adjustments. In the last few years they added gravel to the roads and extended it into many on the usual spots along the road. We enjoyed fishing on Cottonwood lake, just a short hike from our site. We did not have many neighbors, just a few people out camping with their horses.

Stayed for a week in early October. Warm days (80s) and cool nights (50/60s). Super quiet and serene. A few campers on the weekends but cleared out by Sunday morning. Great trails nearby. Strong enough signal to work remotely during the stay (streaming video calls). Close to Denton and Fort Worth. Great trees for hammocks!
