The above rate is based on a $40 weekly rate for dry camping. They also offer extremely reasonable monthly and seasonal rates.

This campground has over 200 acres on fairly flat desert land with 600 randomly placed campsite. Most have no number as each RV can choose their spot between various desert plants.

Weekly campers select their own space in the weekly row which overlooks the desert, daily campers select from the next row across from the road behind the weekly row. Monthly/seasonal/annual campers may select their space from the rest.

The campground has restrooms, showers, dump stations and water faucets. Showers are dated but were clean when I used them (once), although there was a sign in the restroom informing guests that they are cleaned once a week and asking them to please do their best to keep the area clean.

Generator hours are between 8:00 and 12:30 and between 3:30 and 9:00, but those needing to use generators for extended periods of time were "encouraged to use the full-hookup campground across the road, Coyote Howls West". It was extremely quiet when we were there and seemed like most people were not running generators. We ran ours for one hour in the morning and one in the evening.

There is a clubhouse with Wi-Fi and some computers. We didn't use it, as we have our own Mi-Fi. The office provides a calendar of activities, many hosted by the Why Senior Citizens, some located at the Community Center just down the road. These include movies, exercise, crafts, hikes, breakfasts and more. We didn't attend any activities.

It's a great place for dogs with lots of soft dirt, not many cacti, and lots of room to roam, dogs are supposed to be on leash. Also, they should not be left unattended, we saw a coyote right by our campsite one day, although he ran away when he saw us coming out. There is other wildlife around, including lots of birds, and there are also some feral burros in the area, which we didn't see.

There is one general store in Why with basic groceries. The historic town of Ajo is ten miles from the campground and has an IGA. The Visitor Center at the Organ Pipe National Monument is 20 miles south on a 65 mph road, with one border patrol checkpoint checking those returning from down south. The Mexico border is 24 miles south of the campground, and Rocky Point, a popular seaside destination in Mexico is about an hour and 45 minute drive from Why.

There is boon docking on BLM land nearby, but this campground is a great alternative for those concerned about signs stating that "smuggling and illegal immigration may be encountered in this area. Avoid encounters with suspicious groups” posted around the BLM land and other parts of the desert.

After I read about the place online and have been passing by since 1988 I was heading to Mexico but it was getting dark so I decided to camp in my van. Showers were fine IF you tossed in a quarter for warm water.

Very restful quiet spot. I just got a tax bill for $900 on a dumpy house here in Michigan and am seriously considering leaving this corrupt state ,and live in 2 areas of the country depending on weather and this spot would do wonderfully.... IF I could take the comfortable, restful, easy, friendly atmosphere!!

Get an old RV, build a shade cover and a small shed, some basic solar, a moped and cough up $575 [ if that rate hasn't continued to climb for a year ] and retire cheap.

I worked 6 summers as a Park Ranger in Michigan but prefer this spot for quiet, peaceful serenity with classic desert views .

Negatives? : No beach! [ but Rocky Point not too far]

We really enjoyed our stay. Quiet, million stars in the sky, nice people and close to where we wanted to be. Couldn’t beat the price either. Over all very clean but It is dusty when the wind kicks up...otherwise would have given it 5 stars. Would definitely stay here again.

Stayed here for 19 days in January, 2020. Thoroughly enjoyed the visit. Basically, "campsites" are laid out throughout about 200 acres of desert. No electric, but there are water spigots scattered throughout. There are also reasonably clean bathrooms with showers ($1.00 will give you all the hot water you'll need for a shower) scattered around and dump stations scattered throughout. There is also a laundry room on the property. We placed our rig in our site with our dining room window facing due west and were treated to a spectacular sunset every night! They offer daily, weekly, monthly and annual rates here, all of which are extremely reasonable. The place also has a mini-golf course carved right out of dirt (and it is very cool), and shuffle board courts. There is also some hiking nearby. There is a good sized clubhouse with an enormous library and very friendly people at every turn. While there is a hum of generator use during the scheduled hours, solar panels are ubiquitous here. I was easily able to place our portable panels in direct sunlight throughout every day and was able to fully recharge by noon everyday. Every spot would have good solar access here. The only downside is this place is fairly dusty.
Not much of anything in Why. There is a senior center (which sponsors many of the park's activities), a convenience store (which can refill propane tanks) and an outstanding Mexican restaurant. About 10 miles north is Ajo, which has groceries, restaurants and several other services. Mexico is about 25 miles south and Organ Pipe Cactus Nat'l Monument is right on the border. We made several trips there for great hiking and some interesting Ranger programs. We spent one night in Rocky Point, Mexico which is a beach resort town about one hour away.
All in all a great, inexpensive place to spend as much or as little time as you'd like in the winter.

We stayed just to get refreshed before we move on. Friendly folks, most were seasonal. The area feels very safe. At $630 per year it’s cheap living. We paid $15 per night.

We had planned to stay here two months from Nov 2022 - Jan 2023. We fell in love with this place, became members of the Why Seniors, and put ourselves on the waiting list for a permanent site that included a shed and interlock patio. Annual rate is now $800. Water is available at most sites suitable for RVs. There is a laundry facility which is not noted in amenities. Grey water can be released if you have a garden hose attachment. Several dump stations in the park. Activities daily led by resident volunteers include: guided hikes in the area, gardening club, Friday night social & dance, mini-golf course, shuffle board, pickle ball, crafts, game night, movie night, Thursday breakfast, cards, and more. Best kept secret in southern Arizona. Minutes from Organ Pipe National Monument. The Office is closed during summer - season runs from Oct. 1 – May 1, you can count on getting a site since there are hundreds of them. Don't be concerned - plan to stay for a day, week, month or more. Wish their site map was available online? I had Josh send me one. I've posted it in photos.

We loved this campground! We were going to stay only one night but decided to stay two nights. There is such a great vibe about this place, we felt it right away. We stopped here in between boondocking days, mostly to dump and fill up with water, but because of the friendly atmosphere we decided to stay another day. They have a terrific club house and it is obvious it is well cared for. There is a whole library of books, dvds, magazines, tons of games and puzzles. There was a computer area as well as ping pong and an iron and ironing board available.
There are several hikes starting out from the campground. We hiked one and the scenery and view from the top were spectacular!
Although this campground has a lot of seasonal visitors we still felt very welcomed. The people that live here take a lot of care and pride in their sites. We enjoyed just walking around looking at everyone’s gardens and lawn art. We will definitely be back!
