“A reflection of Arizona traditions”
The Ajo area was one of the earliest copper mining regions in Arizona. The town flourished as a major copper producer under the leadership of the Phelps Dodge Corporation until the mine's closure in 1985. Since then, the town has rapidly become a refuge for winter visitors and outdoor enthusiasts. A two hour drive from Phoenix and Tucson, the town is easily accessible via well maintained highways. Its close proximity to the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge offer visitors the opportunity to witness some of the most breathtaking scenery in the Southwest. A short drive south to the Mexican border brings the sights, sounds and traditions of Old Mexico vividly to life. Other nearby attractions include Kitt Peak National Observatory and the Gulf of California.
