Caineville Reef Dispersed Camping

This is actually near Caineville, UT, 37 miles east of Torrey and 23 miles west of Hanksville. As far as I can tell, this is BLM land, even though there's a strip of asphalt (which I suppose is the mix pad) and sign on a pile of dirt/gravel, next to a backhoe, that says it's Utah DOT property. Maybe they just mean the pile and backhoe. Anyway, there was a fire pit someone had made, so I settled in for the night.

A sign at the turn-off from highway 24 warns that the road might be impassable after storms, and when I was there, there was a lumpy patch that had been mud and a bit of a washout. It was no trouble to cross, but it was evidence that the warning isn't hype. I would add a flood warning since this site is only a foot or two above the wash. But the skies were cloudless for hundreds of miles in every direction, so I slept worry free.

Caineville Reef isn't that dramatic if you've just come from Capitol Reef and Grand Staircase-Escalante, but it's still nice. It made a good overnight stop for me. Zero cell service, though.
