“the best free attraction in kansas”
The best free attraction in the Kansas State Capital is the Kansas State Capitol Building in Topeka, Kansas. The Capitol is open to visitors from 8AM - 5PM, Monday through Friday and 8AM - 1PM on Saturday, with free tours conducted by the State Historical Society 4 - 6 times during the day on weekdays. The hours posted above are subject to change, so be sure to call (785) 296-3966 to confirm times in advance. Construction of the Kansas State Capitol Building began in 1866. Although the Capitol Building was in use by the legislature starting in 1869, it took 37 years and $3,200,000 to complete. The Capitol is 399 feet by 386 feet, and 304 feet to the top of the cupola. The stone is brown sandstone from the bluffs along Deer Creek, near Vinewood, in Shawnee County, Kansas. For years there were free tours to the top of the capitol dome taking 45 minutes and climbing 296 steps from the 5th floor of the building to view both the interior and the surrounding community. But they were discontinued for several years, while $330,000,000 in renovations were done to the building. They are starting back up on February 3, 2014.
This was an unplanned filler stop for us on our college visit road trip... what a pleasant surprise for me, my wife and teenage son. This is an awesome Capitol building with some great history and amazing architecture!!!
We planned to spend 30 min here and ended up spending 4 hrs here looking at ALL levels of this facility. There is a really nice employee that runs the Capitol dome tours taking visitors up into the top of the dome and onto the dome observation deck at the very top outside. Awesome views and cool experience. Quite a few steps to get there and very narrow passage ways and narrow spiral staircase so not for everyone if you are Leary is heights or claustrophobic etc.
Great architecture, paintings, building design, materials and photographs of Constructuon etc .
Highly recommend to anyone interested in history or solid buildings design etc
Great stop for our family.
