“Where the tallgrass prairie takes its last stand”
Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is a United States National Preserve located in the Flint Hills region of Kansas, north of Strong City. The preserve protects a nationally significant example of the once vast tallgrass prairie ecosystem.
Tallgrass prairie once covered 170 million acres of North America. Within a generation the vast majority was developed and plowed under. Today less than 4% remains, mostly here in the Kansas Flint Hills. The preserve protects a nationally significant remnant of the once vast tallgrass prairie and its cultural resources. Here the tallgrass prairie takes its last stand.
The preserve has over 40 miles of trails that allow you to go out for a short stroll or an extended hours long hike. The scenic overlook trail cuts through the Windmill Pasture, which is home to a small bison herd. If you are lucky, you will see the herd while hiking. Please be very cautious when hiking anywhere near the herd. Bison are aggressive animals and do not need much of a reason to charge a person. The preserve is free of charge, which is all the more incentive to make the trip to this amazing location.
Currently rennovating the barn and house so it is mostly trails. It started raining while we were there so we did not venture out. The views of the hills are worth the drive out there.
