Confirmed by 1 users | Last reported on February 27, 2023This campground is not much more than a large patch of grass on top of the levee, backed right up to a swampy forest. Great for dogs, or a big party as there is little chance of running into neighbors out here. Lots of cool places to explore in Wildlife Area.
Verizon signal was extremely weak on our cell phones. 1X and a tiny bit of 3G is all we got. But, add a booster to the mix and a good signal should be possible.

Previous reviews describe this area pretty well but a permit is now required if you don't already have a LA hunting or fishing license. The "Wild Louisiana Stamp" can be gotten nearby in town (The very helpful Rangers said the Valero in Krotz Springs is the closest option) or online and costs $2/day.
The road was freshly maintained at the time of our visit, for both the northern and southern approaches. The camping area is actually on the other side of a rather high raised levee, so you don't see or hear the road which appears to go right next to it on satellite. The shoulders are very low and swampy, so if your rig can't make the sharp right hand turn required to get into the campground when approaching from the North, you should plan on approaching from I-10 or drive past and turn around elsewhere. Didn't actually camp here; drove to it but ended up wanting to make more miles that day.

This is not a safe area. I was warned about it and I share because I think others deserve to know. Don’t take my word for it. Here is a link to a news article regarding the area. https://www.theadvertiser.com/story/news/2016/04/25/whiskey-bay-area-known-crime-isolation/83494138/ Also several true crime shows airing nationally have featured this area.

Oh my goodness. A boondock spot that has not been reviewed by someone who has ACTUALLY STAYED HERE since 2017? The last review (by someone who was never here) warning of dead bodies, crime and serial killers? Well; as a retired cop, that's right up my alley....so I decided to go on location, spend the night, and see just what kind of mayhem falls upon me. So here we go....
I entered from the north on a rather bumpy washboard road. The progress was slow and tedious with my travel trailer, but I made it. I did encounter one large buck (deer). He did not appear to be in the act of serial killing, so I pressed on. Once I arrived at the location, right at dusk I had to quickly settle in. While setting up, I was promptly assaulted by an army of mosquitos. These are the steroid mosquitos, the kind that can pick you up and carry you away. Quickly I retreated to my trailer, and prepared for the mayhem that was sure to befall me overnight. It was a clear moonlight night with good visibility. This is a good tactical advantage for my soon to be predator, so I must stay vigilant! The peepers were gently croaking in the woods, but I would not be distracted as I must stay ready for the bad guys that would surely follow. Just then, headlights pierced the evening darkness. Here he is! The serial killer!.....No, just a fella trying to get to I-10, and he continued on his way. After a few hours of darkness and peepers, and zero traffic, I fell asleep. At about 0630 I awoke to a beautiful morning with birds chirping, butterflies in the meadow, etc. I guess I survived another day? I don't know what it was, the peepers, the perfect nighttime temperature or what, but I can tell you I got the best undisturbed sleep there I've had in weeks - maybe months. At 0700 a state parks truck slowly rumbled by, just checking on me I presume.
****BY THE WAY***
The review from 2018 is incorrect. You DO NOT need to go to town to purchase a license to be here. It is still FREE. All you need to do is to fill out a paper permit available at the check station at the entrance of the park, or to log into and out of the park on the free app. That's it.
Lastly, I hope you enjoyed the little bit of satire. Here's the thing folks; there are bad dudes everywhere, so stay on guard always. But, I'm not going to let a decade old news article and a few people who've never actually stayed here to keep me from enjoying a great spot. I encourage you to visit. I survived, and you will too! :)
