Bucks Pocket State Park

Buck’s Pocket State Park was closed by the state of Alabama for about 4 years due to budget cuts. As of June 16th, it has been re-opened after undergoing substantial renovation and upgrades. There are 13 full hookup sites, each with 20/30/50 amp power. 4 of the full hookup sites are pull through. There are also 10 partial hookup sites, each also with 20/30/50 amp power. All full and partial hookup sites are large and can easily accommodate large rigs. All but the 4 pull throughs have new concrete pads which are level. The 4 pull throughs are somewhat unlevel, especially the last one. Each of the sites has a new charcoal grill and picnic table. The best full hookup sites are C1 through C9. These back up to South Sauty Creek, a pretty creek when it’s flowing. There are also 10 primitive sites for tent/hammock camping and 1 back-country primitive group site. In terms of amenities, the park has a playground, a large pavilion and several nice hiking and OTV trails. There are showers and a separate ADA compliant shower/restroom. Be aware that this campground has had flooding problems in the past. The park rangers and camp host will keep a close eye on this and keep guests informed. Flooding of the South Sauty creek can result in road closures near the park entrance as well. Be aware also that there is no cell coverage in this park as it is at the bottom of a gorge. There is good free wifi though so calls and texts are doable if you have wifi-enabled calling turned on.

The last mile of road before reaching the campground is rather steep and a little sporty, with 2 hairpin curves leading down into the valley. The turn into the campground is a little tight too, but the rest is quite navigable. We were in site C23 (one of 4 pull-throughs) for a few days and had that whole side of the campground to ourselves during the week. The pull-through sites are older asphalt and suffer from not being very level, but the new concrete pad back-ins all looked quite level. There is no AT&T or T-Mobile service down here in the valley. Overall, WiFi ranged from pretty good to non-existent, with data rates ranging from 2.6 MB/s down to 0 MB/s. The latter occurring when the park was nearly full, which the office mentioned when we checked in. We had no satellite coverage at our site and there would likely not be any at most of the other sites either. We were not able to get any OTA channels with our omni antenna. There are a couple of moderately strenuous trails in the park, of which Point Rock offers some awesome views of the surrounding valleys and bluffs.

This park is beautiful, right on a creek in a valley surrounded by natural wonders. We camped in one of the 4 pull-through sites in the front of the park, which was very nice and quiet for our crew with dogs. The other sites are right on the creek, but it was also more crowded on that side of the park. There is no cell service, but they provide free WiFi which was strong enough for me to Zoom and stream with. The staff was friendly, the park was spotless, and aside from the hairpin curves on the descent into the park, there was nothing remotely negative about our stay!

This recently renovated park is a gem. The campground is right on the creek. There had been heavy rains on the days preceding our arrival. The culvert/ford across the creek had water over the road and was supposed to be barricaded but the north side had been left open. We stupidly forded the creek only to find the road blocked off on the south side. We reforded the creek and looped around to the poorly marked south entrance.

Most of the sites have concrete pads which are almost precisely level. All have electricity and water. Flush toilets and showers are located in the ranger building. A septic dump is available.

There are no warning signs before the narrow winding road descends steeply to the creek. On our second day the highwater kept the creek crossing closed. A woman pulling a long trailer drove down the north side and reached the barrier. With no place to turn around she attempted to back up, jackknifing the trailer and nearly pushing it off the road. She had to hike to the top as there is no cell service in the deep ravine.

There is no cell service. The park provides free Wi-Fi service which served us very well.

We really enjoyed our stay here.

We stayed during the week and it was nearly empty. Well maintained and super quiet. Our site (7) was very level and located against the creek. 50 amp service, water, sewer, fire ring, and a grill. Sites are a little close but easy to back into. There are a few pull through sites, also. Restroom and showers were clean. Good WiFi provided but no cell service on ATT. The access road in both directions is a little steep and pot holed with a couple of tight turns.

Nice place to stay reasonably close to Little River Canyon.

This is a great little campground. That’s perfect for families and fishing and swimming. Each campsite is level with plenty of room for your RV.
