“A labor of love and community spirit”
Frank Stoeber started the World's Largest Ball of Twine in 1953. Stoeber gave the ball of twine to Cawker City, Kansas in 1961. This impressive ball of twine weighs over 20,000 pounds and measures more than 40 feet in circumference. It was created over several decades by the residents of Cawker City, who donated their own twine to add to the ball. Visitors can add their own twine to the ball, take pictures, and marvel at the sheer size of this quirky roadside attraction.
This place gets 5 stars because I visited it at night. And oh my god, so creepy it was awesome. I was scared to get out of my car to take pictures but I did. Awkwardly smelled good too.
I mean, why not visit?! It was really strange to see a wad of twine. It does stink to high heaven and I wasn't about to hug it like others were doing. All I could think about was flesh eating bacteria. But hey, that's just me.
Perfect little free stop on the way to Little Lady Liberty and the Center of the USA monument. There is gas next door, but not much else.
Good photo opp but not much else, town seemed like it was mostly empty when I stopped by and there wasn't anything across the street except for an empty lot and an old looking sign advertising souvenirs for .25 but i did not see a shop or any visitor information.
Been there two summers ago. Town is small and local gas station attendednt came up the block to tell us about the ball, sign the visitor list, and take our picture. Fun experience for us and the kids.
Be sure to stop by the gift shop. You'll get a piece of twine to add to the ball!
A great stop across this part of the country. But, the town is a little empty.
Just what we expected- a giant ball of twine! My son read about this in The Genius Files book, so we had to stop. Fun photo op. Would have given 5 stars if town had been a bit more lively...on a Sunday nothing was open.
Pretty neat little stop, but beware the bugs!
Bring twine—you can add to it. We didn’t but wish we had. Fun to see. Don’t miss the paintings in “shop” windows with twine hidden in them.
Don't go out of your way just for this. If you are driving along on your way to the geo center of the US, by all means just stop by. It's free, outside and there is parking. It's more a blob than a ball, and it is sure a weird site to see.
