“Nice views of Lost Lake and heavy huckleberry”
Huckleberry Mountain Trail begins at a junction with the Lakeshore Trail #656 at the south end of the lake. After a 1/2 mile moderate ascent a fine viewpoint (Lost Lake) is reached. The trail continues at a moderate grade through lichen-covered old growth Hemlock and patches of Huckleberry, crossing two or three small streams before reaching the crest. On the crest of the ridge (backbone of the Cascade Mountains), the trail joins the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail. Lolo Pass is four miles to the south; Buck Peak is four miles to the north. Directions from Hood River: Travel south on Highway 35 for approximately 14 miles to Woodworth Road (one mile north of the community of Mount Hood - watch for winery sign). Follow Woodworth Road three miles west to Dee Highway 281. Follow 281 north for approximately five miles to the Dee Hardboard Plant. Make a sharp left turn, cross the bridge and stay left. Follow the signs to Lost Lake. At the campground entrance sign, turn left onto Road 1340, drive about one mile to Road 1340620 and turn right. The trail comes very close to the road after about 1/4 mile. Watch on the right for a trail closure sign mounted on a tree.
