Cascade Locks was originally called Whiskey Flats. Home to more than 100 bars, saloons and bordellos at one point, the town’s name was changed before the locks were built in the late 1800s to accommodate steamboat travel (and races) up the Columbia to the inland empire. The local Sternwheeler Days celebrate this the second week of each July. Today the town is working to revitalize itself through tourism, boasting both history and some of the best windsurfing breezes on Earth. The Oregon Pony, the first railroad around the treacherous rapids, is exibited in the historic park next to the local museum. Visitors can imagine how life was back then as they watch local Indians dip-net salmon, and listen to their stories and way of life at the Festival of Nations celebrating their rich heritage on the Columbia.
