Really liked the visitor center; it was full of very interesting information. This is also where you can pick up tickets to tour the Minuteman Missile Command Center, which is a few miles down the road. The command center is the only one left, and has been preserved in the state it was in when closed, in the early 90s. Only six people can take the tour at any given time, as the command center was never designed for groups. You get to see where the full time staff (NCOIC and cook) lived, and where security and missile control officers stayed, and what they did while on duty. Further, you get to go down the elevator and behind the huge steel door, to see where the missile control officers manned the panels and kept watch. It is all very interesting and well worth the drive and time, if you're in the area. Tour is about 30 min and the docent is awesome. A few more miles down the road is a preserved Minuteman missile silo, with a dummy missile, that has a cut-a-way to view how the missile was positioned in the silo. This is all part of our national park system, free and open to the public.
The staff who run the campground are very friendly and helpful. A very nice campground. Peaceful. Place for the kids to play (we don't have kids, but if we did ...) and as we were leaving, they were building a dog park (we did have our dog, and it would have been nice for her). Campground is very accessible to Custer and area sites. Definitely recommend!
This was a nice little diversion on our drive. Saw the graves of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane (a stalker in death!) and walked up to the stop (not for those who tire easily or with mobility issues) to see the views.
Very cool, worth the drive (it was a little off the beaten path for our route). Sacred Indian ground, impressive geologic formation.
The Buffalo Bill Dam is very impressive, as it was built about 90 years ago or so, and at the time, it was the largest dam in the world. The lake is beautiful, as is the whole area in general. The visitor center allows a view of the dam from inside (if the heights on the dam itself are bothersome). Staff very friendly.
We camped at the Buffalo Bill State Park, and that was our fav campsite. The area is just so beautiful and quiet. We camped on the north side. The mountains around were amazing and we watched a beautiful sunset.
