Take a beautiful detour or two on your way from Greenville to Asheville with a leisurely drive by some of these scenic stops. From a historic covered bridge to a waterfall picnic spot, here are some of the best places for scenic sightseers in search of the perfect view or the best photo op.
601 S Main St, Greenville, SC 29601
Falls Park on the Reedy is a 32-acre park in Greenville's historic West End district. It's the perfect spot for photos, short trail hikes, or just hanging out and relaxing in a gorgeously maintained urban green space.
2401 State Park Rd, Greenville, SC 29609
Once known as Camp Buckhorn until the Great Depression, when the Civilian Conservation Corps transformed it into a peaceful natural retreat for all, Paris Mountain State Park is a quiet little gem. It has the mountain, Lake Placid, a pool, and some camping, but if you're short on time, check out the Park Center. It was built by the CCC and has exhibits on the history and ecology here.
Little Gap Creek, Greenville, SC 29356
Poinsett Bridge just outside Greenville is the crown jewel of the Poinsett Bridge Heritage Preserve. It was reportedly built in 1820, making it the oldest bridge in the state, and it's named for Greenville resident Joel Poinsett, a U.S. ambassador who brought the poinsettia flower (named for him) to the country. The designer, Robert Mills, also has a claim to fame: he's the architect behind the Washington Monument. The 14-foot Gothic arch stone bridge is a great photo op.
171 Campbell Covered Bridge Rd, Landrum, SC 29356
Built in 1909, Campbell's Covered Bridge is South Carolina's only remaining covered bridge. The 8-foot long, 12 foot wide pine-built bridge crosses Beaverdam Creek and makes for a very pretty scenic photo.
2748 Pearson Falls Rd, Saluda, NC 28773
Pearson's Falls is another great detour on your way to Asheville. There's a $5 maintenance fee, but it's worth it to see how nicely managed they keep the park for visitors. The falls themselves are just a short quarter mile walk down a path.
100 Frederick Law Olmsted Wa, Asheville, NC 28806
If you have time to stop by the North Carolina Arboretum, you'll really enjoy it. It's a 434-acre public garden, that's located in the Pisgah National Forest. It's located in South Asheville, and it's actually right off the Blue Ridge Parkway.
