Natural Wonder

Our Take

Despite the fact that Lake Mead is a quick trip from Vegas, it’s striking how different the landscape feels. The water is surrounded by desert-y grassland, and it feels extra empty if you’re coming from the city. If you’re visiting the nearby Hoover Dam, spend some time taking the scenic route around the lake and enjoy the natural, peaceful setting.

“America’s first and largest national recreation area”

Lake Mead National Recreation Area offers year-round recreational opportunities for boating, fishing, hiking, photography, picnicking and sightseeing. Boat, hike, cycle, camp and fish at America’s first and largest national recreation area. With striking landscapes and brilliant blue waters, this year-round playground spreads across 1.5 million acres of mountains, canyons, valleys and two vast lakes. See the Hoover Dam from the waters of Lake Mead or Lake Mohave, or find solitude in one of the park's nine wilderness areas.

Don't go in July. Temperatures reached 112 degrees and did not drop during the night. Ended up packing up our tent and finding a hotel. Other than the heat, beautiful lake.

So, after spending a few days in Las Vegas, you'll absolutely want an escape. Lake Mead is a great getaway. I recommend hitting up the Hoover Dam and then Lake Mead. There are rangers who work at the park who are super friendly, and they'll help you plot out your hiking route. You can actually hike to the Hoover Dam, which is pretty rad. Warning, in the summer temperatures can reach up to 120 degrees. So for sure bring plenty of water, sunblock, etc.

Lake Mead was so beautiful. I arrived just in time to view the sun set! I really wish I would have brought my kayak! The recreation area was clean & the water was calm. The view of the surrounding mountains was amazing! I plan to return with my kayak! Great area for families!
