Confirmed by 3 users | Last reported on March 23, 2024The brochure and website for Navajo National Monument shows two campgrounds, but depending on when you visit, don’t plan on it. Canyon View Campground is down a gravel road beyond three locked gates and apparently is only available during the summer.
Sunset View (and the Navaho National Monument in general) has a length limit posted at the intersection of highway 160 and Arizona 564 in Black Mesa. That limit is different than the limit posted at the entrance to the campground, where the entrance sign shows the 28’ dimension applies to the total length. In other places the limit is posted as 40’ overall, 28’ for any single unit.
The loop road is paved as are the parking pads at each of the 31 sites. The restroom has flush toilets, sinks, and a dish washing station, but does not have showers.
The longer sites are parallel parking style. Most of the back in sites are short, but wide enough to park two vehicles. Almost all of the sites had some slope. Some of the sights, including site 8, have beautiful views.
There is an emphasis on quiet. Signs are posted in several locations about loud noise and yelling. Quiet hours start at 8:30 pm.
First come-first served. Seven day limit. No hook-ups or dump station, but there is no campground fee either!
There was absolutely no glimmer of an AT&T signal.
Last, but not least! WATCH OUT FOR THE “DIPS” – CONCRETE GUTTERS THAT WILL RATTLE YOUR TEETH.

Wonderful site, just what we needed and the fee was perfect. We enjoyed the hike out to see the cliff dwelling in the morning. Many flowers and cacti were in bloom? Visit was in June, 2016. Area was quiet and sunset view beautiful. We have a 20 foot tt and as noted in previous review sites were limited for longer rv's. No cellphone coverage.

Site Number: Don't have number but was close to bath house on left side of road.
We did a road trip through Arizona in September 2016 and stayed at 6 different campgrounds in a 30 foot RV. This was our favorite! I was nervous about staying here because the limit is 28 feet (I did my research before leaving home, and then was upgraded to a larger RV than planned upon arriving at the rental place). Our RV fit fine at Site 8 though. The parking at a number of the sites was kind of a pull-off style, perfect for an RV. The campground was peaceful, quiet, simple but lovely. It's so out of the way the only reason to stay there is if you're visiting the monument, but it was worth it.
No cell coverage with T-Mobile or AT&T.

We've stayed atCanyon View before and liked it a lot. Threat of rain caused us to check out Sunset View. While they have running water, it's just in the (clean) bathrooms, and no faucet is threaded. The bathrooms are lit, but have no receptacles for charging devices. This place is next to two amazing ruins, although getting to one takes a several mile hike (each way).
The pads are short (25 feet) and none are level. It's a great place to stay between Monument Valley and Flagstaff.

I don't stay in campgrounds. But because this one was free, off-season, and a good stop-off for our final destination, (Valley of the Gods) we stayed for three nights in the beginning of March.
Holy crap. This place, for FREE, was one of the best places I have stayed at because it has:
1. Scenery
2. Privacy
3. We were the ONLY campers there for the first 2 days
4. They had bathrooms if we needed them. (I used a sink to rinse Trixie's paws off)
5. We had trash cans AT our campsites.
6. There were lots of places/trails to check out.
7. FREE
8. NOONE else here.
9. Snow. I wanted to be in snow, and we got lucky with it. Fresh snow landed the day before we arrived.
So this place is in the middle of nowhere. The cellular service is the worst I have had in a while now... ok to browse during the day and hit or miss with streaming at night. Sometimes couldn't stream during the day either. (Verizon)
There's a nice visitors center. They don't allow RV's over 28'. However, since it is off season, I suppose, there was a 38 footer or so (Class A) that came in and took one of the side-spots.
Most of the sites will NOT accomodate such a rig, but there are about 5 or 6 spots that are parallel to the road. There are not many sites. It's hit or miss during season whether you can get a spot here or not.
They have a second campground, but it's closed during winter. Don't know if it's free or not. The visitors center is nice. Has a lot of information and artifacts about the Navajo tribe that used to reside here.
All in all, this place was pretty spectacular because of the recent snowfall and lack of population. (Aside from a coyote that broke into our trash can outside no less than three times in one night)
Normally, I only boondock. If you dont like crowds, visit here in the winter time. It was one of the quietest places I have stayed at.

The Navajo National Monument is one of those places you really want to go to as it's in the middle of nowhere. But it also makes a great stopover point if you are transitioning the area.
Highly recommended if you need a (free) place to stay. A gorgeous place to stay. A peaceful place to stay (at least in the winter).
Our caravan of 3 travel trailers pulled in the day after a snow storm. Despite signs at the start of the main road to the contrary, all roads (including the campground loop) were plowed. But the sites themselves were not so it was a bit tricky to figure out what was where.
RV Chickadee's review hit the nail on the head so I have no more to add. :)

Asphalt parking, and our site was super level. Also, located by the restrooms and camping sink, which were clean. Our site had a trail down to a secluded picnic table and a sunset overlook. The park has dog friendly trails, and a wonderfully preserved Publoean village for viewing. During our visit the camp was mostly secluded and quite. We also drove up to the canyon campground, which has dirt parking, composite toilets and amazing views!

I can't believe this place is free. Flush toilets, with sinks. Dish washing station outside of restroom. Trash cans. It's clean and quiet! About 30 sites and only 5 filled. Perfect! I've paid actual money for a lot less.

We departed from our tradition and actually stayed in a campground, because this is a tiny square of "U.S." land surrounded by a whole lot of Navajo Nation that we were traversing between Valley of the Gods and Flagstaff. As campgrounds go, though, this was a very pleasant stay.
We also tried to check out the Monument's Canyon View Campground, but it was already gated off for the season on October 1. Many of Sunset View Campground's sites were anything but level, and when they say max 28' length they mean it as most pads were quite short. The campground itself was immaculate. We found #14 on top of the hill which was not only level side to side, but also double-width, which gave me a place to stash my truck after unhitching the trailer. It also provided nearly all-day solar generation and a decent view of Dish Network satellites. The campground was only about half full during our stay, and we never heard anyone else the whole night and even the next morning.
We took a walk behind the visitor center to view the Betatkin Cliff Dwellings with no one else around, which was a very special amenity indeed.
We had two to three bars of what purported to be Verizon 4G, but on Sunday night it was so slow that it was unusable. Speeds were somewhat better on Monday morning.

Hard to believe this campground is free! Super easy access, nice restroom & all around well taken care of! Spaces aren’t large however, so large rigs might have more trouble. No ground fires or water station this time of year. Wish we could have stayed longer!
