“Ideal setting for camping”

Rich in history, this park provides an ideal setting for camping, boating, swimming, hiking, hunting, fishing, and wildlife observation. Hunting is allowed at the adjacent public hunting area. The Steele home, the dwelling of the original settlers on the area, has been preserved much as it was 100 years ago. The park also boasts the northernmost pueblo in the U. S. - El Cuartelejo.

Our first venture out in our new camper, our Micro Minnie Winnebago. The weather was cold and rainy the 1st two days but got better as the week went on and the day we left it was sunny and 70. The lake is not real big but it's beautiful. We stayed at LakeView 2 site and had water and 30 amp electric. There is a dump station near front of park. There are kayaks for rent at the boathouse.

When you think of western Kansas you think of flat for as long as the eye can see. That's what it's like driving there but then you turn off and there are cliffs and canyons. We went to see the Chalk Pyramids which were interesting. Very old structures, a geologists dream. We also went to Battle Canyon, where the interesting story of the last Indian stand happened, The Battle at Punished Woman's Fork. There is a walking (bicycles and horses, too) trail around the lake. Very nice, scenery is awesome.

We went into Scott City a couple of times. It's only 8 miles away so if you don't want to cook or need some supplies, you can find them there.

We have T Mobile and didn't have a signal nor a TV signal, could get a couple of radio stations. We took some movies and watched those.

We wanted to like this park more than we did, but a toxic algae bloom in the lake prevented all water activities. Even with that and it being off-season, the main campground with hookups was completely full (and noisy), so we spent our first night dry-camping in the Flatlander area (for $16/night + $3 fee) then moved up to the Lakeview CG with W/E for $26/night (plus $3 fee, which was unclear if it needed to be paid for each night or once per stay) By the end of the weekend, the main CG was mostly empty again.

Other than water activities, there is a hiking trail that circles the park. It was grown up in some places and hard to find where it all connected, but most of it was navigable and was a good trek. It is also open to mountain biking and horses. There is an unadvertised 9-hole disc golf course that is playable but still being worked on (we didn't play; high grasses and fear of losing discs and encountering snakes kept us away.) There are some historical sites within the park to see, a short, steep climb up to an overlook shelter, and plenty of biking around the park's roads.

The park is close to Scott City where all the amenities are available, and a nice brand new disc golf course at the community park which we did play. It is also not far to Monument Rocks, well worth a visit. On the way to/from there is Battle Canyon, where there is a memorial and historical markers describing the battle of Punished Woman's Fork. It is possible to walk down into the small canyon around a short trail.

We saw lots of wildlife in and around the park including a young bobcat that walked into our site one morning, sandhill cranes migrating, ornate box turtle, whipsnake, turkeys, deer, and one tarantula (yes, there are tarantulas in Kansas!)

Stayed here for just one night in early April 2019 on our way through Kansas to get back to Colorado.

Lake Scott State Park is approximately 35 miles from the I-70 Oakley, KS exit.

The park could use some additional signage to help you locate the campground and then your campsite. We did not see any signage in the campground to help campers get to their reserved campsites. Murphy's Law kicked in for us and we started looking in the wrong loop of the two loops we had to choose from and therefore provided unwanted noise and dust to our fellow campers in the loop we didn't need to drive through.

From what we could gather, the campground had basic no hookup sites, water & electric sites as well as full hookup sites. We opted for a full hookup site as we wanted to dump and flush the black tank before heading back to Colorado to end our trip the next day.

Site 42 is at the end of the campground closest to the boat ramp and marina store and offered a gravel pad that was mostly level and required us to use one layer of LEGO block levelers to true up the rig.

In general, the sites appeared to be fairly close together and there was little vegetation between sites to produce any privacy.

Since we were here early in the season, there was still snow on the ground from a late season snow storm the previous day, the restrooms and marina store had not yet opened for the 2019 season. The early season stay also provided us the benefit of a mostly empty campground as there were only about 5 other campsites occupied.

The hookups worked fine. We did not experience the low voltage issue reported by another reviewer.

Verizon Wireless service was phenomenal at this location. I achieved 57 Mbps download and 16 Mbps upload using a plain old unboosted iPhone 6s.

We found the park to be very picturesque, quiet and relaxing. We would definitely stay here again, but only in the off, or shoulder, season when we would expect there to be very few other campers.

Not too bad of a campground. You're pretty close to your neighbors which we didn't like. The lake is in walking distance, which is very small compared other state park reservoirs. There is a small swim beach and a place to rent kayaks and boats. There are hiking trails around the area. One really neat thing was that you're pretty close to "Monument Rocks" (aka. Chalk Pyramids). We highly recommend visiting that place. It is free and a really neat area. A bit odd that this place exists amongst the flat plains of Kansas.

Pretty much picked your spot as long as red “R” wasn’t present. 1 night stay $13.
Quiet
Bugs weren’t to bad and I was near the water.
Defiantly a place I would have liked a full day to enjoy to surroundings.

I hose this place because it's on my route to Colorado from Dodge City, KS, and I'm really glad I found this gem! The boat house and the main showers appear to be closed for the season, but I found a smaller facility near the tent camping area that was open. Showers were on 15 second timer, but hot enough and it worked. It's very dry here apart from the lake, so no ground fires in the RV area. The tent camping area has fire pits and there is a large smoker available, too. Awesome hiking trails and beautiful scenery. After driving through the plains for several hours, it was exciting to find the canyon and elevation changes here. The plains were also nice, but quite as dramatic as this. During the week it's mostly empty and the park has a good variety of activities. There are playgrounds (with night lighting), horseshoe pits, hiking trails, fishing, ruins, and more. Great prices, too! Overall a good stop and a good choice.

Location is a little off the beaten path, but well worth it. I called ahead just before the office closed, and when I explained we needed a site for 1 night, I was told we could pick any spot. Just disregard ’reserved’ ticket because all reserved sites were for the following day. Self-pay kiosk/cash or check. Electric hook-up for us, water available, and a dump station. Nice level pull-through. Self contained so we didn’t need showers. Highly recommend.

A very nice state park near a small lake. Not crowded when we were here but it looks like it gets busy in the summer.

We stayed in site 110 - Lakeview, the hookups at this site are water and 30/50 amp electric. It is very large and gave us an unobstructed view of the lake. Fishing is very popular in this state park but the thing we loved most was the disc golf course! The scenery in this park is beautiful, however, each time i walked in the tall grass to retrieve a disc, I came out with ticks on my legs! I would imagine the trails could be the same way so be sure to check for them often. Overall we enjoyed our stay even though it was cut short due to severe weather.
