“safe and quiet campground provides easy interstate access”

Whistle Stop RV Park and Antiques store is located in Colby on the western plains of Kansas.  The safe and quiet campground provides easy interstate access with pull-through sites and Internet service.  The office and antique store are located in the “old” Colby depot.  The Prairie Museum of Art and History is adjacent to the campground.  Children will enjoy swimming at the new Aquatic Park that is within walking distance.

We stopped here for one night on our way from Denver to Kansas City. We called ahead to make sure they had a spot which was a good idea as they did seem to fill up around 10 PM. The office is closed due to Covid but the owner sent me a text with a map to the entrance and our spot. They prefer cash or check but will run a credit card if necessary. Outside the office, which used to be the train depot, there is a black mail box with envelopes to put your cash or check in and you drop that in the slot on the office door. It’s pretty basic but they do have laundry facilities and showers if you need them. Dogs are allowed as long as they are kept on 6 ft leashes. There is no dog park. I don’t remember seeing a playground. There are a couple of fast food places nearby. Walmart is just across the street. (You can camp there overnight for free but the lot is quite sloped.)
They have 30 amp and 50 amp hookups at each site. We have Verizon and had full bars. It’s just off I-70 and we did hear a couple of semis through the night but beyond that it was quiet.
We would probably stay here again since Oasis on the Plains Truck Stop is just on the other side of the highway. There’s a Starbucks, dog park, huge playground, restaurant, and gas. Great for starting out in the morning. The Prairie Museum is next to the campground is you have time and are interested.

They are on Covid procedures and the honor system is in place for arrivals. An envelope for cash and drop box was in place.
The bathrooms are clean and maintained. No doors on shower or toilet stalls (just a curtain) but not too much traffic in restroom. Shower water was hot plus the pressure was great.
Used the laundry on site and all machines worked fine.
WiFi was great and was able to quickly load anything needed.
A Walmart is next door but the lights aren’t distracting
The noise from the interstate is loud but that’s the price you pay to have a place just off the exit.

Easy in and out.
In process of upgrading utilities.
Water pressure was very high, be sure to use a regulator..
Only one hydrant for two sites, you'll need your splitter.

Only minor complaint would be, ground was covered with small burrs/stickers. Not the parks problem.
Would stay again.

The location is very convenient, within walking distance to Walmart (across the road) and nice sidewalks to walk the dogs. The campground is also a short driving distance to the rest of town and local businesses. Located close to Interstate 70, the campground was far enough away that the highway noise wasn't a factor or issue. The arrival was smooth. The owner sent a text with information and a picture of the campground. Campendium says 100 sites, but the campground map shows 48 total sites, and they are adding 8-10 more sites. The owner said they were planning to update existing sites. Our site was pull-thru, some gravel, more dirt, and grass.

Our nightly rate was the veteran rate. It included full hook-ups (water, electric, sewer) and access to bathrooms and laundry. There were no other amenities. The owner said they sold the antiques in April, so there were no antiques to enjoy either.

Our favorite thing about this location was that it was a convenient location. We enjoyed the Wheat Jesus billboard, Oasis dog park, Oasis travel stop, local Ace hardware store, and Walmart.

Regarding the cell coverage. We use a Verizon cellular hotspot device. We had nearly no cellular service to our hotspot during the day (8:00 am-5:00 pm) but had exceptional service outside of these hours. Our phones seemed to work fine. This was very frustrating. We can only assume it was due to congestion.

We stayed here for one night while traveling between Abilene, Kansas and Denver, Colorado. The staff initially put us in site 41, but as we pulled in we realized there was no way we were going to avoid scraping our brand new roof on one of the tree branches on our way out (our rig is just under 13-feet tall). We asked if we could get a different spot and that wasn’t a problem (they were willing to call a camper and have him move his truck so we could have more room pulling in, but that wasn’t necessary).

The roads in the campground are gravel. There was (what looked like) a brand new section of pull-throughs that was entirely gravel, but in the older rows of sites the surface was grass with some patches of dirt. Our site was a bit off-level side-to-side, but nothing that a block or two on the low side couldn’t solve. The sites in our row were buddy sites, but while the sites were close they weren’t tight.

They were in in process of remodeling the office building during our stay, so the only service being provided out of the building was checking in campers. There is a lot of open grassy space, particularly near the front of the campground, for walking dogs, though our dogs did pick up some burrs in their pads. We didn’t notice any road noise from nearby I-70, nor from the traffic visiting the Walmart across the street from the campground.

In terms of cell service, the speeds I got on my Verizon Jetpack with MIMO antenna when we first arrived were low - 4Mbps down and 7Mbps up - and they got worse as the day went on: we could not stream video and certain webpages took forever to load. However, I did see decent bandwidth early Sunday morning, with one (brief) reading of 34Mbps down and 17Mbps up, so maybe Verizon is a bit congested. The one speed test I performed on my AT&T phone showed 170Mbps down and 21Mbps up. The campground WiFi was good enough for basic web surfing but struggled when uploading photos.

We’d stay here again if we were in the area.

We booked this online about a month in advance. At 9 am on the scheduled day of arrival we received a text with a receipt, the wifi password, bathhouse door code, and a map of the sites showing which one was ours. All sites are pull-through and quite level. Our site was completely paved with a new patio and picnic table. We use 30a and power was good.

The Colby RV Park (formerly the Whistle Stop) is a nice stopover while traveling through Kansas. It's nothing fancy - just a large, level gravel lot - but it gets the job done. The staff were very nice and helpful, bathroom/laundry building well kept, electricity worked great and the sites were very level. It's close to the highway, so there's some vehicle noise at night. Walmart is literally across the street, which is a great convenience and there are several gas stations, fast food places and another grocery store nearby. I was pleased with the campground and would stop by again.

Exceptionally easy in and out. Gave 4 stars because of the bathroom and showers were very mediocre.

Arrived on time for one night stop. I decided on this park Instead of Walmart for peace of mind but figured out my site was gone and given to other person(one night too) without any reason other than she don’t like my last name. It bothers me because this site are shared water, electric and sewer with other, meaning everything is in front of my trailer . Lot of work for night. Privacy is gone, my view is gone. Un-respectful. Don’t come.
