This small museum tells the tale of a town, Thurber, TX, that went from boom to ghost town in the space of 50 years. It tells this story very well. The museum displays are destined for all ages, Elementary School through adult. There is an introductory film in the Opera House and a recreation of some of the main features of this company town with many displays and artifacts to explaining coal mining, brick making, the oil drilling, and an explanation of the lives of the diverse population that consisted of immigrants from at least a dozen different countries who wanted to work, support their families and be Americans.
From google maps, the 'road' is a UTV trail that follows Saleratus Wash. Sounds like a great place to get trapped in a flash flood.
The area is now inaccessible, Big chain link fences and No Trespassing signs. A small sign says “Viewing area temporarily closed”.
We really tried to get to this bridge. We approached from the Missouri side, Apple Maps said to get off on Riverview, but based on earlier reviews, I thought the parking would be on the Illinois side, plus views of the St. Louis skyline. I got Waze to give me a circuitous route to “Old Chain of Bridge parking” but the road and all alternate roads to cross the levy that runs parallel to the Mississippi River there were closed. If you are going to try to get to it, I’d say try from the Missouri side on Riverview Rd ( which is old Rt. 66) off of I-270.
