Perfect for a night’s stay plus a beautiful bayside park. There are three first-come first-served spots here. Only self-contained, no tents. The cost is $12 and it’s well worth it. This place is popular with walkers and runners, but is peaceful and calm at night. Some freeway noise but nothing disruptive.
If you spend the night here and have the time enjoy the park. There is a picnic area down the main road, Dillon Point Road, and also some walking and biking trails.

Carrizo Plains is a quietly magnificent setting. Not as jaw-dropping as Yosemite or Grand Canyon but not as many people, either. If you want solitude and quiet, then this is your place (except during a super bloom).
KCL is our go-to camp spot when we are here. Be advised that it is several miles of washboard road to get here but worth the trip.
The camping is free and first-come-first-served. We’ve never had a problem finding a spot, but your mileage may vary. It is primitive camping, no water, vault toilets, but each of the ten or so campsites has a fire ring, table, and lantern hook. When we arrived on Monday the restrooms were gross. Apparently, in the off season, they only clean them on Thursday. Not really a problem for us because we are self-contained.

One of our favorites on our trip up Hwy 1. Stayed here one night as a plan b when we couldn’t get into Salt Point until the next day. Would have stayed longer if we’d known how nice it was. The campground is small but beautiful. We even had electricity at our site (#10). Bathrooms are clean, but the showers were semi-functional. Dumpsite ($7.00). The one drawback is there is no drinking water available, which is why I gave it four instead of five stars.
There are several hikes nearby. We walked the trail down to the beach; a beautiful walk through redwoods to a gorgeous little cove (.3 miles).

This is a well maintained campground. Sites are well spaced and many are suitable for larger RVs. Dry camping only but easy access to water and flush toilets. Campground hosts were super nice and helpful.

Ended up here looking for a cheap stay to wait for payday. Turned out to be a great stay. The place is beautiful and secluded. It is really a spot for horse people though there were no horses when we were there. In fact, there were only a few other campers at all.
Be advised that there is no water, but no problem if you’re self-contained.

Reserved here because all the surrounding state parks were booked, but soon discovered that this was a unexpectedly pleasant place. It’s right off Hwy 1 meaning that there is some traffic noise, but nothing overly disturbing. The park, El Chorro Regional, has a wealth of activities, including a golf course (which I didn’t use), a botanical garden (which I highly recommend), and a pretty decent hiking trail which leads to some amazing views.
The bathrooms are clean and have showers (bring quarters).
Full hookups are available, but we stayed in the primitive loop (Bishop).
All in all a very nice campground.

This is one of our favorite places! We live only 15 miles away and so it is convenient for a quiet evening away. We always come early to mid week and there are never very many other campers. Some of the reviewers mentioned the trains, but I actually enjoy the sound of trains in the distance. This is dry camping at it’s best.

Since the last review there have been some changes. Most notably two full hook up sites are available. One is reservable the other is first come first served. Full hook ups $30.00! $28.00 for over 65. Can’t beat it.
