Perched atop Dead Horse Mesa and close to Dead Horse Point, this is a spectacular place to camp. We arrived on October 23 and the temperatures dropped below freezing each night we were there. Two of the nights featured blustery winds as well, so we were very thankful for our furnace. Our site provided 20 and 30 amp electrical, but now water or sewer. There is an excellent dump station on the way out of the campground. A picnic shelter, fire pit, and an elevated tent site were also provided.

Our site was almost perfectly level, but walking around the campground, I learned we were one of the lucky ones. Saw one class A standing on the jacks with three wheels off the ground. The camp hosts do a fabulous job, though as the place was absolutely immaculate.

And then there are the views. My goodness! A short walk (or drive) will lead you to incredible overlooks of the canyons carved by the Colorado and other rivers. Sunrises and sunsets were beyond inspiring. We used it as a base camp to explore Arches and the Island in the Sky portion of Canyonlands, but I think I would have been content just hanging out at the campsite and taking in the views.

5/6/24 Update: The road has been graded! The craters and chasms are gone. Don't know how long it will last as it is, after all, a dirt road. But absolutely nothing fell off our rig this time! (Although it is windy ... oh, so windy!)

One must clearly understand before driving in: this is not a glamping destination. But once you are dissuaded from such a gross misconception, camping here is an incredible treat.

We arrived in a driving rain squall around 5:00 PM on Labor Day, traveling East on I-90. The exit is very well marked (Homestake), so it was easy to find. Once the pavement ends, though, the road gets a bit challenging. A humongous water-filled crater greeted us at pavement’s end. Despite inching along, the monster gobbled up one of our leveling jack pads, which we didn’t notice until after we set up camp. A half mile walk, and a few minutes probing the opaque water with a pole managed to locate it … we’ll try to put it back on when we can park on some level pavement.

The dirt road is rough, but passable for our 28-foot Class-A. It appears to get worse the farther you go, but we found a beautiful site in a large clearing. We set up next to an established fire ring, which we don’t plan to use, but it does sound inviting. Leveling was easy (even with one missing Snap Pad) and the view is spectacular. We have neighbors, but there is plenty of space and no sign of the noise several reviewers have noted. Internet access was spotty despite good cell signal strength. (Others have noted this as well.) Definitely a bandwidth issue.

We’re looking forward to a walk to the lake in the morning.

Would we camp here again? In a heartbeat!

On our way North on I-15, I called and got hold of Annie, who along with her husband and two boys, own and run the campground. I asked here if they might have room for us, and she was very accommodating, saying they had plenty of room with only a few reservations. She texted me a map and encouraged me to call when we got in to make sure we didn't "poach" one of the few reserved sites. (My wording, not hers.) When we arrived, she was not able to answer the phone, so we pulled into site 40 and waited to hook up. She called back a short time later and said Site 40 would be fine. In the meantime, we got on to their website, and found that we could search available sites. 40 was opened, so we reserved it and paid on line.

All this brings me to my first point: their website is outstanding and easy to navigate. Kudos.

Second point: Annie was extremely friendly and helpful. Kudos again!

Our gravel site was very nearly level, a pull-through, with water and 30-50 amp power. There was a tag on the water hydrant asking that we not remain connected if freezing weather was expected. It was (Down to 26 overnight), so we used it to put 20 gallons or so in our tank and are set for the rest of our trip. The utilities are in excellent shape, looking almost new.

The facility is basically in hibernation this time of year (October 28), but it is obviously well cared for. The vintage trailers are cute. The children's playground looks fun. The place is immaculate. Sites are reasonably spaced, especially for a commercial campground. Trees need a few years to grow, so it might get hot in the summertime. Some might be bothered by highway noise and the adjacent railroad line, but things calmed down at night. (Besides, without my hearing aids, this almost deaf guy can sleep through anything.) At $35, I consider it a bargain.

All in all, a very pleasant overnight. We'll stop by if we pass this way again.

Traveling from the Spokane Valley to Moab, Utah, we stopped at Beaverhead Campground overnight. What a find! We arrived about 5L15, and there were still plenty of sites to choose from. (October 20) More rigs rolled in later, but I don't think it was full. Our site has a firepit, a pavilion with a concrete floor for the picnic table and an AWESOME view of the reservoir. The gravel pad was almost level and the jacks easily took care of that. As noted by a number of reviewers, there is highway noise from Interstate 15, which runs adjacent to the campground. But removing my hearing aids took care of any danger of sleep depredation. No utilities, but this is pretty cushy boondocking.

The place is immaculately clean, beautiful and FREE!

On our way to Arizona to visit our kids. Baker City was a perfect first night stop and A-Frame was convenient, clean, level and friendly. Huge field for Max the mutt to stretch his legs. (Us too.) The owner was incredibly friendly and welcoming. We loved the custom lettered sandwich board welcoming us to our site. 31 was a pull-through site, so we didn't have to unhitch the toad. The site was perfectly level. Full hookups including water despite overnight temperatures dropping into the teens. Easy access from I-84.

We'd stay again in a heartbeat.

This is a wonderful little mom and pop operation! Carolyn and Tom are extremely friendly and helpful. We had a pretty heavy rain during our second night, which should be expected on the coast at the end of March. Sites are grass, but Carolyn told us there was a thick layer of gravel underneath to keep us from sinking. She was right. While it was wet, the grass kept the mud at bay. Some traffic noise from 101 was noticeable, but not unpleasant.

We were adjacent to the office and WIFI was excellent. We were thankful for this, as Verizon cell service was spotty and AT&T for our Wineguard was non-existent.

All in all, a very pleasant stay, and we'd stay again if we're ever down this way.

On our way to Arizona we stopped for the night and oh, what a stop! Sites are first come/first serve and we snagged one of the two remaining. There is an overflow area, though. Power is available for an extra ten dollars, but we opted to go dry. Got up in the morning for a four-mile walk through the gorge. Words could never do it justice ... clearly sculpted by the hand of God!

We arrived on a Friday to attend a Saturday wedding in the area. Our campsite (#5) has a wonderful view of the marina, , reservoir, and the mountains to the West. Sites are spacious and include a covered picnic table and a fire pit. 20, 30, and 50 amp power are included, but no water or sewer at the campsites. There is water available at hydrants along the access loop (One was right across from us.) There is a dump station at the entrance to the loop. Our site was not quite level, but our leveling jacks had no trouble getting us straightened out. We did not have to resort to leveling blocks under the tires.

There are many, many lengthy hiking trails in the area, some paved with concrete, some with gravel, and many more are dirt. One could easily spend a week exploring them all. We enjoyed? several significant rain squalls while we were here, but the ground seems to perk well, and no standing water remained after a few hours.

In summary, we really enjoyed it here and would be pleased to return and spend a few more days.

Second night on our October 2022 trip from Spokane Valley to the Moab, UT area, we stopped for the night at this very pleasant and immaculately clean campground. Nice walk out to the jetty with great views of the lake. It was just what we needed after navigating the chaos of Metro Salt Lake City at glacial speed. Our site had 30 Amp electric and fresh water. There is dump station available as you make your way out.

There is significant noise from the nearby airport, but it tapered off after dark. All in all, a great find.

Traveling to Jackson to meet up with our son and daughter-in-law, we stopped here hoping for a quick overnight stop. Site #1 was a pull-through, fairly level and empty. There we met Laverne, one of the most gracious, friendly and helpful camp hosts anyone could hope to encounter. The next night, after failing to find anything closer to Grand Teton, we showed up accompanied with by our son's camper van. Laverne drove me around the campground in her car to show open sites that were adjacent. Definitely above and beyond the call of duty.

Now, for the campground: roads and sites are gravel and you might have difficulty leveling in many of them. As with most Forest Service campgrounds, there are no hookups, but water hydrants, pit toilets and garbage bins are available in each loop. The toilets were spotless, another testimony to Laverne's stewardship. Highway noise might bother some, but it dies down at night. (And for old guys like me, noise is a non-issue when hearing aids are removed.) It's certainly not fancy, but it's only a 30 minute drive to Jackson, so it served well as our home base while exploring the area.
