We scouted out both sides as we weren’t sure which would work better. We stayed in 107 on the west side and it was nice. There were lots of open sites but it was Wednesday. The flies were bad and lots of mosquitoes at night. Not surprising as the water is all swampy. The trails are overgrown. They do have bikes you can borrow for free to use in the trails which was unique and nice.
Bathrooms and pay showers were decent. The cost is what got me. A little much if you are from out of state. Not sure who wants to stay here if they live in NE.

Noise off highway was minimal. Lake was pretty. Only one other camper and us on a Saturday night.
Disbursed camping at its finest.
Only got one bar of Verizon in certain spots.

We stayed on the beach. The other people did not appear to be camping but more partying. Lots of fireworks going off all night.
At 2:00am we woke to a police yelling in their bullhorn “get out of the vehicle with your hands up”.
We looked out the window and saw a police truck in the ocean a few feet and a police truck a few yards behind them doing the talking. Appeared someone stole the police truck and drove into the water.
We were about 20 yards away from an active standoff situation. Scared, we jumped in our suv and drove past to the exit. Police were all over the place with guns and an ambulance.
I would not advise staying here. Our cell service was spotty as well.
We have boondocked for years and this was the only time I feared for my life. Do yourself a favor and Stay at the north beach by Corpus Christi. That was way better.

Loved this place but get there early as it fills up fast. It goes on for a long time tho so we did get a spot. Road is rough, washboard with occasional ruts. 4runner with an Escapade did fine. Quiet, even tho right off the interstate and lots of hiking and rock climbing. No cell service.

After finding all the area state campgrounds full we ended up finding this place. Perfect for us to crash for the night on our way back to WI.
There is a neat creek with a dam with Crawfish. New play set, pit toilets, potable water and shelters. Fire pits.
We had the place to ourselves on a Friday night.
Noise form road quieted down at night. A few trains passed by but all in all we slept well.

One side is permit and the other is free.
Quiet except for some cars driving on the beach occasionally. Just a Port a potty for bathrooms.
We took the car ferry to Galveston and that was fun. Saw lots of dolphins in the bay.

As others stated yes the road in is rough. But doable in a minivan or car. Just a lot of bumps and rocks. Tip: don’t drop your camper off, just go when you are ready for bed. More than one trip up and down this road is time consuming.
But the absolute silence and serenity was worth it. No light pollution and big skies. Pack in pack out. No bathrooms.
Just 3 miles to the Panther Junction gas station and store.

Apparently you have to have a toilet in your RV to camp here. By law.

First I want to say we did the switch back road in with a 5 x 8 ft squaredrop style trailer and our SUV just fine. There was another smaller teardrop trailer there as well. I booked the site as a pop up camper and that seemed to be acceptable. Please note not all sites are big enough so be sure to look at the notes when you book.
Did not find any water so bring that in. Pit toilets.
Reservations are required now. This is a little drive from Yosemite valley but not bad. No cell service here.
Site 33 is the best and not like the others. Has a concrete pad and on the dead end. Quiet and views of the stars.
Also stayed a night in site 35 and that was nice but we had a raging River thru the site during rain showers.

Really clean place. Close to I-10 but minimal noise. Hosts were super friendly. Big Dog park. Hot showers. Didn’t get to use pool as it was 30 degrees out but it looked very nice.
