Best to come via E. Robinson St. Waze sent us to North Porter Ave which is the side entrance to the new camping area with paved pads. These are clean, level, back in slots. Full hookups. There are many sites on gravel you would think with electric only.

We called ahead to check on an RV slot. Staff assured us there is room, just show up and choose an empty site. Gates are open 24/7. Camping is $35 per night and it can be dropped off in cash or check in an envelope into a secure Dropbox or pay in person from 8 am to 5 pm. We stayed one night as it’s an easy hop off of I-35. Weekly rate is $210.

The only noise is occasional sirens as the hospital is across the street. There seems to be some cut through traffic going around the new paved camping area but that died down in the evening.

We would definitely stay here again.

We arrived before sunset and set up in an unused area of the large parking lot near another motorhome. Parking is paved and level so we extended out our slide outs. We used generator for air conditioning and cooked dinner, then walked the 1-mile circumference of the casino parking area and climbed the stairs in parking garage for exercise. Saw a great sunset and heard Red Wing Blackbirds singing in the nearby lot. Talked to security who ensured us it’s fine to boondock here. Parking lot lights are on all night and there is some driving noise, so plan accordingly. We had a fine 1-night stay. Bring ID to enter the casino.

Well kept RV park caters to winter snowbirds with activities and social calendar. It’s within walking distance to Bentsen Rio Grande Village State Park and great for birders. We stayed 2 nights to enjoy birding snd sightseeing. Laundry on site, plus pool, hot tub, and more.

Monan Campground directions: Enter from E. 38th Street entrance at Coliseum Ave and head north into Fairgrounds. Turn left (west) at roundabout and drive straight to Monan row which backs to west fence of fairgrounds. We elected for water and electric only. There is a dump and full hookup sites are available. We enjoyed the walkers and bikers on the public walkway behind us and the birds in the area. We walked around the deserted grounds to stretch our legs. Lights come on overhead at dusk and there is some noise from the bikers on the trail. Book on line prior to arrival and security unlocks your electrical box. 2023 price is $45 plus tax and fees is about $51 per night.
