There are a number of reviews across the web that describe the unique, casual, and hippie vibe of this place. I have to strongly disagree with those, as I found it to be a strangely uptight atmosphere for what it is. There are rules signs posted on every surface and for some reason, they've named half (the other half had another name) of their food stand, "No Loose Dogs Saloon." The phrase "No Loose Dogs" is spray painted across multiple places on the property and it was a bit off-putting and misleading as we thought it meant leashed dogs were allowed, but we were informed they aren't (they are in the campground portion, but not around the patio or grass in the hot springs section). There's a three drink maximum, which is fine, but every member of the party has to come physically get their own drink, which just felt unnecessary, especially when you're lounging around the hot springs in plain site of every staff member. Food and drinks were expensive and overall, the only vibe I would describe is weird. The hot springs did feel nice though.

As for the camping itself, the sites were close together but fine and they all back up to a ravine, which is nice. We saw a pair of huge cranes on the hill one morning. However, the wifi is a complete joke! It worked during the very middle of the day, but completely dropped out in the mornings and evenings. For a place without cell service, this felt like a huge issue. We had to work and just barely managed to get stuff done in the middle of the day. If you come here, pretty much consider it off the grid.

Otherwise, it's super convenient to the Madison River (tubing, hiking, fishing, etc) and 35 minutes from Bozeman, so there's a decent amount around to keep you busy.

The dump was open as of 7/2/21. Great signage to direct you to it, easy pull through access. No charge.

Our time at Fort Welikit was very comfortable. We got site #44 (back-in W&E) and though the site is sort of on a tiny hill, we loved the view behind it of meadows and trees. The bathrooms are private rooms with a shower and toilet in each, which was really great! The laundry room was also easy to access and use, with an additional laundry room with bigger machines for large loads. We were also able to fill our propane tanks here. For the last two days of our stay we were moved into site #35 (pull-through, full hookups), which was huge and also lovely. Our price reflects the site #44 rate with a Good Sam discount

The campground is super close to the town of Custer, as well as Custer State Park (it's on the road to Needles Highway and Sylvan Lake). Got both Verizon and AT&T no problem.

We were also here during one of the heatwaves sweeping the west as temperatures got up to 113 degrees. We were very grateful to have a comfortable spot to hunker down in. Loved our site, B7, right at the top of the hill with a big tree providing us some shade (w/e only, very little leveling required). The landscaping is lovely with sunflowers planted everywhere and beautiful yellow finches hopping all over. The camp hosts were very friendly and the bathrooms were BEYOND clean! Like I'd be happy to eat a meal in there. The shower pressure was also awesome, just great all around bathroom experience. There are also several lovely short trails branching out from the campground, which made really nice sunset walks. The free ice cream upon check-in was also a nice touch. Not much else in the area besides the Bighorn battlefield, but a great place to chill out for a little bit.

We stayed here over Christmas and had a wonderful time. The location next to the beach and close to Nags Head is perfect and the entire campground is super peaceful and chill in the winter. It's pretty windy this time of year and we had the misfortune of being here during a severe thunderstorm with a tornado watch! Intense dumping rain and wind up to 50 mph. It was certainly an experience, but everyone came out unscathed and the campground didn't experience any ocean overwash like some spots further down on Highway 12 did. There was so much rain part of the campground flooded, and a few rigs on the inner ring had to move the next morning (keep in mind this was intense, heavy rain, definitely beyond the norm). Everyone on the outer ring stayed dry.

Despite that, we still had a great time and even though our site was relatively close to the road, I didn't notice a lot of traffic noise like others have mentioned (the wind was noisier). I also thought the sites were easy enough to back into, despite their narrowness, and the dump station at the marina across the street is very accessible (first left as you turn into the marina). Friendly and attentive staff (they knocked on our door to let us know about the tornado watch). Would definitely come back!

I LOVED this campground! In late December, it was so quiet and peaceful. The sunsets and moonrises every day were unreal and the scenery was beautiful. With the the cooler weather, we appreciated the lack of shade and it made our trailer just warm enough for comfort. The boardwalk is still broken, but I thought up to that point it's still a nice enough walk through the marsh to go. The other hiking trails were peaceful and pretty as well. Dale and Lorretta are wonderful camp hosts, very helpful and friendly (the park rangers too). Lots of space in between the sites and the bathrooms are high-quality with hot water showers. Our site was level and we appreciated the amount of space available for backing in.

There's not a ton in the surrounding area, so this is the perfect place to just relax and unwind away from others (good in Covid times). We had two Verizon bars, but that was still enough to stream movies.

We stayed at Birch Bay for 20 days in September/October and it served as a lovely base to visit Bellingham and the area. You're staying in the forest, so it can be a bit dark and cold, but it's also beautiful and the trees protected us from several wind storms that passed through. The gorgeous tidal beach of Birch Bay is this campground's literal backyard and making the short walk from the woods to the shore felt like a luxury every day. The campground was mostly quiet except for occasional leaf blower use by the rangers, which seemed unnecessary.

Check in and reservations were also tricky in the off season (starting Sept 15th) as it's first come first served, but is just based off paper and an iron ranger, so there's possibility for confusion. If you're staying for a while and don't want to reserve every day with cash, the ranger station is staffed (very briefly) at 12pm, so you can pay with card.

The bathrooms were clean with coin-operated showers (50¢ for 3 min) that weren't the best but got the job done.

Site 30 is a lovely spot with extra room. We were able to work remotely every day with both Verizon and AT&T. One of my favorite features of this campground is the incredible bird life, from loons in the bay, to herons in the creek, and huge owls in the trees overhead.

Finishing up a three month stay at Cedars and it's been a fantastic home base. My nightly cost reflects the monthly rate. Clean, well-maintained park with a big field to walk dogs, heated pool, and laundry. Very convenient to Bellingham and even though it's right next to the freeway, you get used to the background noise. Verizon is non-existent here and AT&T is passable. Thanks to a tip from the office, we were able to stop by the local T-Mobile and pick up a hotspot for $50 a month, which has worked great.

I can't say enough wonderful things about the women that work the front office. They are incredibly helpful and kind. They get so many guest deliveries every day and sort through all the packages to let you know when they arrive. They had tons of local advice and were able to adjust our dates when we needed it.

Also I love the massive hedges between the sites...makes your space feel so cozy and private!

As of May 2022, we tried to camp here to find the pull-out itself blocked off. However, if you drive just a couple minutes down the road (coming down the pass), there is another semi-circle pull-out on the left that was unblocked. Room for a couple large rigs and a space for vans and cars on the side. Gorgeous views of the valley, good Verizon signal (poor AT&T), quiet despite being right next to the road, and 15 minutes from town. Cooler temps here up on the pass than in the valley. Had it mostly to ourselves, joined by a couple overnighting vans and cars.
